Calhoun teams off to solid start after two home meets

- From staff reports

The Calhoun swim team is off to a great start this season as they have competed in two home meets so far with the boys winning both.

Both teams opened the season at home on Nov. 3, hosting a quad-meet at the Calhoun Aquatic Center, and the boys came away with a dominant win. The Jackets finished with 212 points to defeat Blessed Trinity (148), Rome (107) and Gilmer (41) as they were able to capture four State qualifying times in relays and 12 more individually.

The Lady Jackets finished third behind Blessed Trinity and Rome, but they still achieved three State cuts in relays and there in individual events.

Earning individual State qualifying times for the boys team were Cody Workman with two, Bo Dyar with two, Cal Parker with two, Joe Kauffman with two, Caleb Black with two and John Carroll with two.

For the girls team, individual state qualifiers came from Allie Workman with two and Abigale Reid with one.

Relay qualifiers for the boys were Brock Bates, Bryce Bates, Markie Hutzler, Dawson Kerns, Spencer Brown and Jeremiah Petty and for the girls were Reece Duke, Vivianne Funes, Cassie Workman and Kathryn Russell.

Both teams continued on that momentum from the first meet when they hosted Northwest Whitfield, Southeast Whitfield and Ringgold at the Calhoun Aquatic Center last Thursday ( Nov. 10). The Calhoun boys once again took first with an impressive 226 points ahead of Northwest Whitfield (143), Heritage (65) and Southeast Whitfield (62), and the Jackets had 15 Statequalifying swims in the victory.

The Lady Jackets narrowly missed a first- place finish, earning 179 points to place one point behind Heritage with 180. Northwest Whitfield (92), Ringgold (35) and Southeast Whitfield (6) rounded out the girls team scores. The Calhoun girls had four State- qualifying performances.

The Calhoun boys and girls were back in action on Thursday when they hosted Darlington, Coahulla Creek and Pickens County. (For details on that meet, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.)

Their next meet is at home on Dec. 1 when they host Southeast Whitfield, Cass and Creekview. For breaking sports news and info, follow Calhoun Times Sports Editor Alex Farrer on Twitter @AFarrer_CT.
