Cooper gets first start in Jackets’ victory at Virginia Tech

Several former local football standouts have gone on to the next level to play college football and many are making an impact for their teams this season.

More than 30 players that graduated from either Calhoun, Gordon Central or Sonoravill­e can be found on college football rosters throughout the nation, and several of those saw action in their team’s most recent game.

Here’s a roundup of the former local players who appeared in the box score and how they did last week:

KENNY COOPER, Georgia Tech, Sonoravill­e

Cooper, a freshman, got his first career start at center in the Jackets’ 30-20 upset win at Virginia Tech and made several key blocks to help the team run for 309 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

ADAM GRIFFITH, Alabama, Calhoun

Griffith had a perfect day for the Crimson Tide in their 51-3 home win over Mississipp­i State on Saturday, going 3-for-3 on field goals with makes from 30, 28 and 39 yards. The senior kicker also handled eight kickoffs for an average of 64 yards per kick with four touchbacks and made 5-of-5 extra points. he was also recognized by the Alabama coaching staff as one of four players named Special Teams Players of the Week.

JIREH WILSON, Wofford, Calhoun

Wilson had a big intercepti­on in the Terriers’ 36-28 win at Chattanoog­a on Saturday. The freshman linebacker also had a tackle for loss and a hit on the quarterbac­k in the victory.

GABE FREEMAN, West Georgia, Calhoun

Freeman had three solo and one assisted tackles for a total of four, including a sack, in the Wolves’ 69-0 win at West Florida on Saturday. The sophomore linebacker also had a pass breakup and one carry for 29 yards.

TAYLOR LAMB, Appalachia­n State, Calhoun

Lamb threw or 167 yards on 14-of-28 passing with one intercepti­on in Mountainee­rs’ 28-24 road win at Troy on Saturday. The redshirt-junior quarter- back also ran for 12 yards.

CHANDLER CURTIS, Mercer, Calhoun

Curtis had three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Bears’ 24-19 loss at Samford on Saturday.

THOMAS LESTER, West Georgia, Calhoun

Lester started at receiver and had two catches for 28 yards in the Wolves’ 69-0 win at West Florida on Saturday. The sophomore also had a solo tackle in the victory.

TRISTAN FULLER, Sewanee, Calhoun

Fuller, a sophomore linebacker, had one carry for eight yards in the Tigers’ 62-14 loss at Hendrix to finish their season.

LUKE GREEN, Shorter, Calhoun

Green, a senior tight end, had one carry for one yard in the the Hawks’ 44-0 loss at Valdosta State to wrap up their season.

SEBASTIAN WILLER, Georgia State, Calhoun

Willer, a redshirt-junior, started at right tackle in the Panthers’ 37-23 home loss against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday.

TRENT FRIX, Georgia, Calhoun

Frix, a junior long snapper, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Bulldogs’ 13-7 win at home over Auburn.

DJ PRATHER, Chattanoog­a, Gordon Central

Prather, a redshirt-junior, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Mocs’ 36-28 loss at home to Chattanoog­a on Saturday.

KOLBY REYNOLDS, Mississipp­i College, Calhoun

Reynolds, a freshman defensive back, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Choctaws’ 42-7 home loss to North Alabama in their final game of the regular season.

DREW McCRACKEN, Kennesaw State, Calhoun

McCracken, a sophomore long snapper, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Owls’ 45-10 win at home over Presbyteri­an on Saturday.

MATT EDGAR, Lindsey Wilson, Sonoravill­e

Edgar, a senior kicker and holder, and the Blue Raiders had the week off following the regular season but will host Grand View in the first round of the NAIA Football Championsh­ip Series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
