Frix gets first career tackle; Pair of freshmen earn honors
Several former local football standouts have gone on to the next level to play college football and many are making an impact for their teams this season.
More than 30 players that graduated from either Calhoun, Gordon Central or Sonoraville can be found on college football rosters throughout the nation, and several of those saw action in their team’s most recent game.
Here’s a roundup of the former local players who appeared in the box score and how they did last week:
TRENT FRIX, Georgia, Calhoun
Frix, a junior long snapper, saw action on special teams in the Bulldogs’ 35-21 win over Louisiana-LaFayette on Saturday in Athens. He recorded his first career tackle in the victory on a punt return.
DREW McENTYRE, The Citadel, Calhoun
McEntyre, a freshman offensive lineman, and the Bulldogs lost their first game of the season last Saturday at North Carolina, 41-7, but now have a bye in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs. The Citadel (10-1), the No. 6 seed, will host the winner of Charleston Southern at Wofford on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. McEntyre was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team on Tuesday.
JIREH WILSON, Wofford, Calhoun
Wilson, a freshman linebacker, had one solo and two assisted tackles for a total of three in the Terriers’ 17-0 home win over Virginia Military Institute on Saturday. Wofford earned a berth in the NCAA FCS Playoffs where they will host Charleston Southern in the first round on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to visit The Citadel in the second round. Wilson was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team on Tuesday.
TAYLOR LAMB, Appalachian State, Calhoun
Lamb threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-22 passing in the Mountaineers’ 42-17 home win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. The redshirt-junior quarterback also ran for 92 yards on five carries and a touchdown.
KENNY COOPER, Georgia Tech, Sonoraville
Cooper, a freshman offensive lineman, saw action at center in the second half of Georgia Tech’s comeback 31-17 win over Virginia at home on Saturday.
MATT EDGAR, Lindsey Wilson, Sonoraville
Edgar, a senior kicker and holder, successfully held on four extra points and two field goals and also handled the kickoff to start the second half during the Blue Raiders’ 34-27 overtime win at home over Grand View University in the first round of the NAIA Playoffs on Saturday. They now advance to the quarterfinals where they will play at No. 2 Baker University (Baldwin City, Kan.) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
CHANDLER CURTIS, Mercer, Calhoun
Curtis had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Bears’ 27-24 home win over Furman on Saturday to wrap up the season. The junior receiver and kick returner also had a carry for three yards and returned three kickoffs for a total of 68 yards. The Bears finish with a 6-5 record for the season.
ADAM GRIFFITH, Alabama, Calhoun
Griffith made 2- of- 2 extra points in the Crimson Tide’s 31-3 home win over Chattanooga on Saturday. The senior kicker also handled two kickoffs for an average of 60 yards per kick.
SEBASTIAN WILLER, Georgia State, Calhoun
Willer, a redshirt-junior, started at right tackle for the Panthers in their 30-24 win at home over Georgia Southern on Saturday.
DJ PRATHER, Chattanooga, Gordon Central
Prather, a redshirt-junior defensive lineman, participated but didn’t record any stats in the Mocs’ 31-3 loss at Alabama on Saturday. Chattanooga will play in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs on Saturday when they host Weber State at 2 p.m.
DREW McCRACKEN, Kennesaw State, Calhoun
McCracken, a sophomore long snapper, participated but didn’t record any stats in the Owls’ 28-7 loss at Charleston Southern on Saturday as they wrapped up their season at 8-3.
