Sonoravill­e boys earn quality road win with comeback

It didn’t come easy, but the Sonoravill­e Phoenix got a hard-fought, quality road win on Monday night to move to 2-0 early in the season.

Sonoravill­e trailed by nine at one point in the fourth quarter but closed the game strong to earn a 59-56 victory at north Paulding. The win follows an 83-65 win over East Paulding at the Dalton Thanksgivi­ng Tournament last Tuesday.

On Monday, Wil Walraven led the Phoenix with 21 points, and Bryce Waters also had a big game with 19. Brad Wilson added eight. Sonoravill­e trailed 34-25 at the half and 44-39 after three quarters before outscoring North Paulding 20-11 in the fourth.

The Phoenix were back home on Friday to host North Murray for a Region 6-AAA crossover matchup. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are back home again on Tuesday to host Murray County at 7:30 p.m.

Calhoun (1-0) led 18-7 after one quarter and 36-14 at the half and then only allowed five points total to the Indians in the third and fourth quarters combined while continuing to pad their lead.
