Lamb’s big day helps App. St. clinch share of Sun Belt title

Several former local football standouts have gone on to the next level to play college football and many are making an impact for their teams this season.

More than 30 players that graduated from either Calhoun, Gordon Central or Sonoravill­e can be found on college football rosters throughout the nation, and several of those saw action in their team’s most recent game.

Here’s a roundup of the former local players who appeared in the box score and how they did last week:

TAYLOR LAMB, Appalachia­n State, Calhoun

Lamb had a big day to help lead the Mountainee­rs to a 37-7 win at New Mexico State. The redshirt-junior quarterbac­k threw for 220 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-28 passing along with running for 71 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries to help Appalachia­n State (9-3) clinch a share of the Sun Belt title. They will await their bowl destinatio­n which will be announced on Sunday as they look to earn their second straight double-digit win season.

ADAM GRIFFITH, Alabama, Calhoun

Griffith made three field goals from 29, 25 and 34 yards in the Crimson Tide’s 30-12 home victory over Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Saturday. The senior kicker was also 3-for-3 on extra points and handled seven kickoffs for an average of 64 yards per kick with five touchbacks. He was recognized by the Alabama coaching staff as Special Teams Player of the Week along with teammate Minkah Fitzpatric­k.

DREW McENTYRE, The Citadel, Calhoun

McEntyre, a freshman offensive lineman, and the Bulldogs had a bye in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs but will host Wofford on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the second round.

JIREH WILSON, Wofford, Calhoun

Wilson, a freshman linebacker, had one assisted tackle in the Terriers’ 15-14 home win over Charleston Southern in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs. They will visit The Citadel on Saturday in the second round at 6 p.m.

DJ PRATHER, Chattanoog­a, Gordon Central

Prather, a redshirt-junior defensive lineman, had a pass breakup in the Mocs’ 45-14 home win over Weber State in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs on Saturday. They will visit Sam Houston State on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second round

MATT EDGAR, Lindsey Wilson, Sonoravill­e

Edgar, a senior kicker and holder, successful­ly held on two field goals and one extra point in the Blue Raiders’ 42-27 season-ending loss to Baker ( Kan.) in the NAIA Championsh­ip Series Quarterfin­als. Edgar and Lindsey Wilson finish the season with an 11-2 record and have made three consecutiv­e postseason appearance­s as he wraps up his college football career.

TRENT FRIX, Georgia, Calhoun

Frix, a junior long snapper, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Bulldogs’ 28-27 loss at home to rival Georgia Tech.
