Sonoraville boys advance past 1st round at Chattooga
The Sonoraville Phoenix got their run at the Chattooga Tournament off to a good start on Wednesday night with a hardfought victory.
The Phoenix built a lead at the half and held off a few second-half rallies to earn a 57-51 victory over Ridgeland in the first round of the tournament. Sonoraville (10-1) trailed 18-15 after one quarter but outscored the Panthers 14-6 in the second to take control.
Leading the way for the Phoenix was Wil Walraven with 25 points, eight coming in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Bryce Waters added nine, and Trent Daniel and Tavian Reynolds both contributed eight apiece.
Sonoraville moved into the semifinals of the tournament on Thursday night to face host Chattooga. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are on the road on Tuesday in a non-region contest at Pickens at 7:30 p.m.

Ridgeland girls 56, Sonoraville 35
The Lady Phoenix trailed by just five at the half, but they couldn’t keep pace in the final two quarters to fall in the opening round of the Chattooga Tournament on Wednesday.
Sonoraville (2-9) went to the break behind 29-24, and Ridgeland put the game away by outscoring the Lady Phoenix 12-7 in the third and 15-4 in the fourth.
No Sonoraville player reached double figures as Cortney Williams led the team in scoring with nine points. Maliyah Parks added seven.
The Lady Phoenix moved into the consolation bracket of the tournament where they faced Chattooga on Thursday. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They travel to Pickens on Tuesday for a non-region game at 6 p.m.
Jackets drop two at Hyundai Classic
The Calhoun boys headed down to Milledgeville to play in the Volume Hyundai Holiday Classic with a lot of momentum and an undefeated record on the season so far, but their first two games in the tournament didn’t go the way they wanted them to.
Calhoun (9-2) dropped their opener in the tournament 65-50 on Tuesday against King’s Ridge Christian and then followed that up with a tough 61-51 loss to Maynard Jackson in the consolation bracket on Wednesday.
In Tuesday’s game, a lopsided second quarter made the difference in the game as Calhoun was outscored 23-9 in the period to give King’s Ridge Christian a 38-21 lead at the half. Malik Lawrence led the Jackets with 16 points, and Chapin Rierson added 15.
On Wednesday against Maynard Jackson, Calhoun rallied from down 27-17 at the half to pull within 38-37 at the end of three quarters but couldn’t get over the hump in the final quarter as they were outscored 23-16 to fall by 10. Rhett Abernathy had a big game with 20 points, including hitting four 3’s. Rierson added 17 points.
The Jackets looked to rebound on Thursday in their final game of the tournament against Fulton Leadership. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will next play at Adairsville on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in a Region 6-AAA contest.
