Shaw Industries employee helps SHS students, Camp New Adventure as a Junior Achievement instructor

- Staff Reports

Eric Taylor, Contract Specialist for Shaw Industries, got involved with Junior Achievement at Sonoraville High School and ended up teaching a course. The course, JA Titan, was a computer-based business simulation. He met with the students once a week for seven weeks teaching them about various business concepts and then applying those concepts in the business simulation. There were 21 students in the class.

“The JA Titan business simulation was a lot of fun to teach since it relates closely to what is done at Shaw in regards to pricing, production, marketing, research and development, capital investments and charitable contributions,” said Taylor.

Taylor is an active United Way of Gordon County volunteer as well as Junior Achievement volunteer. He used his knowledge of United Way of Gordon County to help during the lesson about charitable contributions. The students reviewed all of the participating United Way agencies in Gordon County and a $100 donation was made on behalf of the students. The students selected Camp New Adventure for this donation, as they were impressed by what this organization does for our community.

On Dec. 29, 2016, Taylor had the opportunity to meet with Sue Morgan, director of Camp New Adventure, and her son, Rodney, to present the donation on behalf of the students. They came dressed in their Camp New Adventure shirts. The shirts were very bright and cheery and represent the program well. The students from Lisa Smith’s class and Taylor learned a lot about this organization and are pictured. Both Sue and Rodney expressed a great deal of gratitude to your students for this charitable contribution.
