Local Piggly Wiggly closing doors permanently this Saturday, Jan. 21
According to Rockdale Grocery, the company that owns the Calhoun Piggly Wiggly, located on Red Bud Road, the store will permanently close its doors this Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017.
“It’s not one of those things you want to do, but at some point, it’s just not financially possible,” said Scott Lewis with Rockdale Grocery. “We can’t continue to operate; there’s not enough sales to continue.”
According to Lewis, the decision on what will happen with employees of the store has not been made.
Rockdale Grocery, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates a chain of grocery stores in north and west Georgia. The company was founded in 1986 and is based in Conyers, Georgia. It has stores in Bremen, Cleveland, Dillard, Calhoun, Conyers, Bowdon, Hogansville, Franklin and Villa Rica, Georgia.
Boasting live worship, camaraderie and community, The Basement, a nondenominational community worship experience, will open its doors this Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning with refreshments and a meet and greet at 5: 30 p. m., with worship service beginning at 6: 30 p. m.
The Basement sits in the totally transformed and remodeled 903 D. South Wall Street, underneath iWispr and beside Family Dollar.
Locals Ron Norrell and Sean Blockley have undertaken the project, bringing a true non-denominational worship experience to Calhoun.
“This is a vision that was placed in our heart three years ago, to have a worship night outside of the church,” said Norrell. “We are going to have three worship services a month on a Saturday night. The reason we chose Saturday is, we don’t want to draw anybody away from their church on Sunday. We want all denominations to come in and worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and take a little bit of that back to there church- that was the vision.”
The services are contemporary and geared more towards young adults, but anyone is welcome at The Basement. “I would say, high school to college age; but really, anybody. It doesn’t matter.”
“The first primary focus ( of the services) is worshiping in spirit and truth,” said Blockley. “There will also be teachings that support worshiping in spirit and truth, and raising up young musicians and people who want to point their skills in the right direction. There will be some teaching ministry, but the main focus is worship.”
At 5: 30 p. m. on Saturday, there will be a meet- and- greet, where light refreshments will be served. At 6: 30 p. m., the worship service will begin and is expected to last around two hours.
The services are not affiliated with any particular church, being non- denominational, Blockley stresses that the services are come as you are and open to the whole community.
Blockley will be leading the first worship service this Saturday, with the band that does the Six05 Service at Meadowdale Baptist Church on Sunday nights, along with Madison Smith.
