Johns’ record-breaking effort highlights Calhoun’s win

- From staff reports

The Calhoun Lady Jackets got a solid non-region road win on Saturday and a school record fell in the process.

Calhoun senior Jana Johns scored a game-high 23 points, which moved her past former Lady Jackets standout Taylor Palmer atop the all-time scoring list in Calhoun High girls basketball history, as she led her team to a 63-55 victory at Cartersville. Johns already holds the single-season scoring record after breaking that mark last year.

In Saturday’s contest, Calhoun (15-3) pushed ahead in the second half after the game was all knotted at 27-27 at the halftime break. The Lady Jackets outscored Cartersville 15-12 in the third quarter and then finished things off with a 21-16 advantage in the fourth.

Along with Johns’ big day, Calhoun’s Cassie Henderson added 19 points, and Anna George contributed eight.

The Lady Jackets were back home on Tuesday as they tried to build on their seven-game win streak when they hosted Region 6-AAA South rival Sonoraville. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Haralson County on Friday at 7 p.m.

Sonoraville (16-2) trailed 35-28 going to the final quarter before finishing the game with a flurry by outscoring the Raiders 26-13 in the fourth. The Phoenix had a tough day from the field but made up for it somewhat by going 20-28 at the free throw line.

Wil Walraven led Sonoraville with a game-high 24 points. Bryce Waters added nine, and Noah Cunningham and Lucas Brooks each chipped in with six.
