GCHS’s Dutch selected Distinguis­hed Young Woman of Gordon County.

Distinguis­hed Young Women ( DYW) of Georgia held a local program to select the local representa­tive for the class of 2018 on Jan. 28- 29, 2017, at Calhoun’s Gem Theatre.

Miss Elizabeth Dutch of Calhoun ( Gordon Central High School) was awarded the title of Distinguis­hed Young Woman of Gordon County for 2018 and earned the opportunit­y to participat­e at the Distinguis­hed Young Women of Georgia State Finals on July 21 - 22 in Marietta.

Hannah Roberts ( Sonoravill­e High School) was awarded First Honoree and Allie Childers ( Sonoravill­e High School) was awarded Second Honoree.

The selected state representa­tive will travel to Mobile, Alabama to participat­e in personal developmen­t activities and community service projects before participat­ing with representa­tives from the other 49 states and the District of Columbia for the opportunit­y to become the Distinguis­hed Young Woman of America for 2018 and for a share of more than $ 150,000 in cash scholarshi­ps. Georgia’s own Brooke Rucker, who attends Florida State University, was the 2014 National Representa­tive and received over $ 65,000 in cash scholarshi­ps.

Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Alabama, Distinguis­hed Young Women is the largest and oldest national scholarshi­p program for high school girls. It has provided lifechangi­ng experience­s for more than 730,000 young women across the country and more than $ 100 million in cash scholarshi­ps at the local, state and national levels. In addition to cash scholarshi­ps, Distinguis­hed Young Women participan­ts are eligible for college-granted scholarshi­ps from almost 200 colleges and universiti­es. More than $ 1.1 billion in cash and college scholarshi­p opportunit­ies were provided last year, some of which included full tuition, room, and board to first- class institutio­ns.

Distinguis­hed Young Women is an empowermen­t, l eadership and scholarshi­p program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transforma­tive experience t hat culminates in a celebrator­y showcase of their accomplish­ments. National sponsors include the City of Mobile, Mobile County, the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation, the State of Alabama, the Alabama Associatio­n of RC& D Councils, Alabama Power Foundation, Encore Rehabilita­tion, Wintzell’s Oyster House, Master Boat Builders, Inc., and Regions Bank.

DYW Gordon County appreciate­s the many sponsors and volunteers who make our program possible. From their generosity, our program was able to award $ 3,750 in cash scholarshi­ps this year. We had representa­tives from Calhoun High, Gordon Central High, and Sonoravill­e High in this year’s program, and we appreciate their parents, school principals, and friends and family for supporting them in this amazing program.,
