Gordon County is hosting their first annual YLS GORDON COUNTY COLOR RUN A 5K AND 1 MILE FUN RUN FOR ALL AGES on Saturday, March 25 at the Sonoraville Recreation Department. Registration Time is 8 a.m.; race time begins at 9 a.m. Pre registration price is $30 adult; $20 child. Race day registration is $35. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Rome Chapter 525, meets the first Monday of the month except holidays at the Rome Nation Guard Armory located at 340 Wilshire Road at 6:00 P M. The Calhoun Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the regular called Board Meetings at 12:00 p.m. Special Board meetings will be advertised in advance. All meetings are held at 607 Oothcalooga St. Calhoun, Georgia. The public is invited to attend. Call to verify a meeting is schedule prior to attending.
The Calhoun Area Writers meet every third Friday of the month at The Harris Arts Center from 6-7:30 p.m. The club exists to support writers, from published authors to those who simply enjoy writing down their thoughts.
Lutheran Services of Georgia’s Specialized Foster Care Program is recruiting individuals and couples to provide safe and stable foster homes for children waiting in Georgia’s foster system. Information Sessions are held on the first Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at the Rome Office, located at 336 Broad Street, Ste. 200 Rome, GA 30161. The following documents will be needed for appointments: drivers license or state issued photo ID; original social security cards for everyone living in household; proof of citizenship or immigration status such as driver’s license, US military ID, US passport, state issued photo I, US permanent resident card, alien registration card, employment authorization document, certificate of citizenship; most current heating bill within the past 30 days; if your home is heated with natural gas, kerosene, propane or wood you MUST bring both your heating bill and electric bill to the appointment; proof of income for the last 30 days for everyone 18 years or older living in the home including alimony, child support, disability, pension, rental income, retirement, social security, unemployment, wages from work, wages from self employment and workers compensation.

DCA CHANGE - If you’re involved in manufacturing, warehouse and distribution, processing, telecommunications, broadcasting, tourism, research and development, biomedical manufacturing, or services for the elderly and persons with disabilities, be aware that the Department of Community Affairs tier rankings for 2017 has reclassified Gordon County from a Tier Two to a Tier Three. As a result, businesses planning to create new jobs in counties with a higher tier level for 2017 are strongly advised to file a Notice of Intent (NOI) with DCA no later than Feb. 15, 2017 in order to preserve the 2016 JTC benefits for the next three years (2017, 2018 and 2019). The Calhoun Beautification Committee, along with volunteers, will distribute 4100 free trees on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 10 a.m. Tree will be available at the Northwest Georgia Livestock Pavilion, located at 1034 Highway 53 SW in Calhoun. Parking is available on the north and south sides of the building and at the Gordon County Agricultural Service Center. No parking on the grass. Each person will receive 20 tickets to exchange for 20 free trees. The following trees are available: Northern Red Oak (50), Crepe Myrtle (1000), Green Ash (50), Red Bud (1000), and Dogwood (1000).
