Phoenix score early, often for huge day

Sonoraville finishes chances in win vs. Morris Innovative

- By Alex Farrer

The Sonoraville Phoenix have gotten off to a solid start this season, but they haven’t capitalized and finished on several scoring chances in early games according to coach Hector Holguin.

They certainly made up for that on Friday night as they scored early and often to roll to a 10-0 mercy-rule shortened home victory against Morris Innovative.

The match didn’t make it to the end of the first half before Sonoraville’s Maurilio Segura ended it with a goal in the 38th minute to force the early stoppage.

Holguin said it was good to see his team make the most of their chances, and Friday’s display was a showcase of how many different ways they can threaten opposing teams.

“This is our fourth game, and we’ve had a lot of scoring chances so far,” said Holguin. “We haven’t finished a lot of them despite outshooting teams by a wide margin. I was glad we finished some chances today, and everyone got to play and contribute.

“It’s going to be hard for other teams to shut us down. You never know who is going to get hot or who is going to be the guy that has a big day. We’ve got several players that can do it. The best part is that it doesn’t matter to them who it is as long as we win the game. That’s what is most important to them.”

Sonoraville ( 3- 01) started quickly on Friday with goals in the first 10 minutes of the game from Dawson Holbrook and Alexander Soldevilla. They continued the dominant first half with two more goals from Soldevilla in the 18th and 19th minute to give him the early hat trick, and Omar Jacobo made it 5-0 in the 20th minute with a goal off a Kevin Villatoro pass.

Sonoraville’s Villatoro turned on the scoring touch late in the first half with three quick goals to earn a hat trick of his own. He scored in the 33rd, 34th and 35th minute.
