Warriors welcome Nix as new coach

Former Temple DC looks to bring new energy, outlook

- By Alex Farrer

A new era of Gordon Central football officially begun on Tuesday as Cory Nix was introduced as the Warriors new head coach.

Nix takes over for David Humphreys, who resigned in early January after four seasons at the school. Nix comes to Gordon Central after most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at Temple High this past season.

“Ever since I found out I had gotten the job a few days ago, everything has been a whirlwind,” said Nix. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into this. Without God and my wife, none of this is possible. When I first saw the job opening, I was interested because I’ve got a family and three young children, and I thought this was the perfect environment to raise a family. My goal has always been to be a head coach, and I’ve been chasing that for the last several years. I know I’ve got my work cut out for me, but I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve coached in and around Atlanta before moving out to Temple before last season, and I know God brought me out there for a reason to show me that a rural-type school is where I needed to be. That’s where I knew I wanted to coach is a school anywhere from Class AA to Class AAAA, and this was a perfect fit for me.”

Nix played at and graduated from UAB and has been an assistant coach at Chamblee, Sequoyah, Woodstock and Roswell before taking the job at Temple prior to last season.

Gordon Central High principal Doug Clark said throughout the process of searching for a new coach following Humphreys’ resignation, he felt like Nix worked his way to the top of the list quickly.

“We started out with 38 applicants and narrowed it down to 12, and Coach Nix was No. 1 on my list,” said Clark. “He was pretty high on every- one else’s list on the committee, but as we continued to go through the process, he worked his way to the top for everyone. Everyone was in complete agreement by the end that he was the man for the job. Then we had him and the other four finalists come here and be with the kids in the weight room just so they could interact and get to know the them, and Coach Nix was right there beside them, spotting them and talking to them about their technique. That just reinforced everything for us.

“We feel like he is very energetic and driven, and he can recruit the halls to get kids out and get our numbers up. Our goal is to get him here within the next few weeks to get started, and we believe he’ll do a great job here.”

Nix will teach physical education and weights at Gordon Central, and he said he hopes to be on campus and started in the next two weeks. He has a wife, Kacy, and three children, Mackenna (10), Hudson (8) and AJ (3).

He said that family is a huge thing with him, and he wants his players to feel like part of his family.

“One of the first things I told them when we met today is that they are automatically my family now, and I love them,” said Nix. “That’s how it works with me. That’s who I am. No matter what they do down the road, they’ll be my family. They’re going to see that quickly, and they’ll be around my kids too so that will teach them to be good role models. I want my players to learn to do things the right way all the time or there will be consequences. You have to be a teacher when you’re a coach, and you want to teach your players right and wrong and to hold up the standards we put in place.

“That’s also what I want from my assistant coaches are the ones that put the kids first. We want to be coaches that later on in life the kids come back and tell us how much of an impact we made on them.”
