GC’s Hudson starts season out with first-place finishes

Gordon Central’s Megan Hudson got her track season off to an impressive start last Saturday at the Cartersvil­le Invitation­al with a pair of first-place finishes.

The senior had a personal best in the shot put with a 36-03 to earn the top spot in the event, and she then followed that up with a throw of 113-08 in the discus for first place in that event. That attempt was just four inches shy of her personal best.

Hudson and the rest of the Gordon Central track team opened their home schedule on Thursday at home when they hosted Coosa, Model, Southeast Whitfield and Armuchee for a home meet. (For details on that meet, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will host Sonoravill­e, LFO, Model, North Murray and Armuchee for the Fourth Annual Farmers Insurance Relays on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at Ratner Stadium.

BASEBALL Sonoravill­e 2, Cass 1

Sonoravill­e got a stellar outing from Grant Clark and added some timely hits to earn a victory in a rematch of an earlier non-region loss.

After falling to Cass last week 4-1 at home, the Phoenix returned the favor by beating the Colonels 2-1 on their home field as they rode the arm of their starter. Clark went 6 1-3 innings and gave up just one run (unearned) on three hits while striking out an impressive 13 to earn the win.

Avery Hopper came on from there for Sonoravill­e (3-2) to earn the save with 2-3 innings of work as he struck out both batters he faced to end the game.

The Phoenix offense got a double and an RBI apiece from Storm Carnes and Matthew Vincent for all the offense they would need to support Clark’s outing. Wyatt Castoe and Chase Kirby each scored runs.

Sonoravill­e was back on the road on Thursday to visit rival Gordon Central. ( For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They host Chattooga on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Christian Heritage 4, Gordon Central 2

The Warriors rallied from an early deficit but couldn’t quite make up the difference in a non-region loss at home on Monday.

Gordon Central (0-5) fell behind 4- 0 after three innings, but rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third. That was as close as they would get, however, to fall to visiting Christian Heritage.

Dawson Cline took the tough- luck loss despite throwing a complete game. He went seven innings and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out three. He also led the offense with two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Also contributi­ng offensivel­y was Josh Temple and Cam Williams with two hits apiece, Clayton Hogue with a double and an RBI and Jacob Silvers and Justin Brooks with a hit apiece.

The Warriors were back home on Thursday to host rival Sonoravill­e. ( For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Sonoravill­e on Monday at 5:55 p.m.

SOCCER Calhoun boys 10, Haralson County 0

The Phoenix opened their region schedule with a statement home win on Tuesday night, earning the victory in less than one half before the mercy rule was forced.

Alexander Soldevilla led the way with four goals for Sonoravill­e (4-2-1, 1-0). Dawson Holbrook and Maurilio Segura each had two goals, and Kevin Villatoro and Tate Moore added a goal apiece. Villatoro was also the ultimate distributo­r with an incredibly seven assists.

Omar Jacobo had two assists, and Yorlin Piedrasant­a added one. Adam Schwarts and Lane Moore combined for the shutout in goal.

The Phoenix are at home once again on Friday to face Southeast Whitfield in a non-region contest at 7 p.m.

Calhoun girls 11, Haralson County 1

The Lady Phoenix scored early and often on Tuesday to open their region schedule with a dominant mercy-rule shortened victory.

Leading t he way offensivel­y for Sonoravill­e ( 5- 1, 1- 0) was Avery Hamilton with three goals. Deya Irick, Kirsten Young and Prissilla Arambul each had a goal and an assist, and Bailey Brewer, Cheyenne Cloud, Madaline Roddy, Maggie Hamilton and Hazel Trujillo added one goal each.

Haralson County’s lone goal game on a penalty kick before the game was called in the 49th minute thanks to Sonoravill­e’s 10- goal lead.

The Lady Phoenix are back at home on Friday to host Southeast Whitfield for a non-region test at 5:30 p.m.

Calhoun-LaFayette games canceled due to weather

Calhoun and LaFayette were scheduled for a non- region doublehead­er on Tuesday with the boys and girls teams set to square off, but Mother Nature had other plans.

The games were canceled due to inclimate weather in the area and will not be made up.

The Calhoun boys are back home on Friday to host Heritage in non-region play at 7 p.m. The Lady Jackets are off until March 9 when they host LFO at 5 p.m. for a Region 6-AAA contest

TENNIS Lady Jackets get opening win over Heritage

The Calhoun girls opened their season with a 5-0 victory over Heritage on Monday at home.

The Lady Jackets swept the singles matches without losing a set as they got wins from McCartney Kessler (No. 1), Carly Briggs (No. 2) and Marlee Nichelson (No. 3).

They continued the momentum in doubles as the No. 1 team of Emma King and Molly Mashburn won a tough match in three sets, and the No. 2 team of Sammy Bramblett and Neeley Abernathy won in two sets.

The Lady Jackets visit Sonoravill­e on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a region match.
