Sara Gaines
Sara Ruth Scott Gaines, 100, of Kennesaw, entered her eternal reward on March 5, 2017 after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her parents William Miles Scott and Sally Brown Scott, husband, C. F. Gaines, Jr. seven siblings and their spouses Dewey Scott ( Florence; Inez McMillan), Dean (Era Hammond), Ovell Floyd (Frank), Cora Lee Barton ( Weyman), Aurie Reynolds ( George), Frances Edwards (Wallace), and Virgil Chambers Howard ( Robert Chambers; Frank Howard). She is survived by son Fredric “Fred” Scott Gaines of Kennesaw, daughter, Alice Gaines Hughey ( Terry) Acworth; one granddaughter Dr. Christine “Chrisi” Allison Hughey, PhD, her husband Dr. Bruce E. Wilcox PhD and their son, Zachary E. Wilcox of Harrisonburg, VA, nieces and nephews William “Scotty” Scott ( Bonnie), Fain D. Scott Sr., Pam Barton Houglan, Cathy Barton McClellen ( George), Scott Barton, Charles Reynolds ( Carolyn), Sally Jo Reynolds Barnett, ( Winston) Cecilia Chambers Rogers ( Jimmy), Becky Chambers Dean (Richard), Leonard White ( Paula), Don Gaines ( Gina), Nancy Gaines, and Alan Gaines ( Stacy).
Born in Plainville on Dec. 12, 1916, she was educated in the Common School of Plainville, and graduated in 1932 as Salutatorian. She was married to C. F. Gaines, Jr. of Rome for 56 years until his death in 1991. She was employed at Brighton Mills in Shannon during the depression years; was stay- at- home mom until her youngest was in school then was employed by Sears Roebuck, Inc., in catalog sales, retiring after 25 years of distinguished service.
Sara and C.F. moved their family to Kennesaw in 1959 where C.F. he was employed by Lockheed Martin and after his retirement, operated Gaines Photography for 17 years from their home on Main Street.
Growing up, Sara was a member of Plainville Unity Baptist Church, later Enon Baptist Church in Rome. She was active in WMU and had a heart for missions. For the past 58 years she was a member of Kennesaw First Baptist Church and was the oldest living member at the time of her death. She taught a youth Sunday school class for several years. She ministered to the shut- ins after her retirement.
A visitation with the family was held from 5 until 8 p. m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, 2950 North Cobb Parkway Kennesaw, GA 30152.
A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Gaines will be held at 11 a. m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 in the Chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home with a visitation from 10 until 11 a. m. Officiating are the Reverends Dr. Perry Fowler and Charles Pearce. Interment will be at Scott Cemetery, Moore’s Ferry Rd. Plainville, GA at 3 p. m. on Wednesday.
Pallbearers are William M. Scott, Don Gaines, Alan Gaines and Rick White. Honorary pallbearers are Fain D. Scott Sr., Charles Reynolds, Jimmy Rogers and Richard Dean.
