Lady Jackets have great day to finish first at Gwinnett Open

The Calhoun girls golf team traveled to metro-Atlanta over the weekend and came away with an impressive win.

The Lady Jackets won the Gwinnett Open at Chateau Elan on Saturday by finishing first in points. ( A modified stableford points system was used for scoring.)

Kate Mashburn finished second individual­ly with 38 points. She was followed for the Calhoun team score by Molly Mashburn with 30 points, Katie Kauffman with 26 points and Maddie Crump with 22 points.

The Lady Jackets will next compete at the Lady Catamount Invitation­al on Saturday at Dalton Country Club.

GOLF Sonoravill­e boys, Hulsey have solid day at Fields Ferry

The Sonoravill­e boys earned a win in a trimatch against Calhoun and North Murray on Thursday, and Sonoravill­e’s Clara Hulsey shot a low score at Fields Ferry.

The Phoenix finished with a team score of 178 to place first ahead of Calhoun (180) and North Murray (213). Sonoravill­e’s low score came from Blake Rouzee with a 40. Also contributi­ng to the team score was Lane Strickland ( 42), Ryan Redd (44) and Destin Summers (52).

For the girls, the junior Hulsey shot an even par 38 for an impressive round. North Murray’s Savanna Satterfiel­d also had a great day with a two-under 36.

Sonoravill­e will be on the road on Thursday to take on North Murray at Indian Trace.

BASEBALL Calhoun 2, Woodland 1

The Jackets got a run in the top of the seventh after the game was tied for much of the day to earn a non-region road win on Thursday.

The game was tied 1-1 going to the final inning, and Calhoun’s Brett Potts earned an RBI the hard way with a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Payton Morrow for what would stand up as the game-winning run.

Offensivel­y for Calhoun (5-3), Bryson Davis had a hit and an RBI to go along with Potts’ RBI. Carson Kemp, Tanner Gallman and Jackson Braden also had hits.

Davis Allen got a no decision after a solid start, the sophomore lefty’s first of the season. He went four innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits while striking out seven. Braden came on to work three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He gave up two hits and struck out five.

The Jackets visited Ringgold for a big region matchup on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.)

They host rival Sonoravill­e on Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

Rockmart 16, Gordon Central 0

The Warriors fell behind big early and could never recover as they suffered a region home loss on Thursday.

Gordon Central (0-8, 0-2) saw Rockmart score eight runs in the top of the first to set the tone and never look back. The Warriors were held to three hits, coming from Josh Temple, Jackson Fowler and Logan Hefner.

Gordon Central was back in region action on Tuesday at Pepperell. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Coosa on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

TRACK Gordon Central sweeps home quad meet

Gordon Central hosted three other schools for a quad meet on Thursday at Ratner Stadium and came away as team winners in the girls and boys competitio­n.

The Lady Warriors finished with 106 points to take first ahead of Pepperell (80), Model (36) and Armuchee (16). They were led by Megan Hudson who was first in the shot put (35-02) and discus (102-06). Also with first-place finishes were Cameron Luna in the 400 meter (1:07.56), Brooklyn Towe in the 100 meter hurdles (18.69), Ruby Deras in the 800 meter (2:55.33), Claudia Cox in the pole vault (7-00) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (4:41.70).

On the boys side, Gordon Central finished with 104 points. They placed ahead of Pepperell (74), Armuchee (37) and Model (29). The Warriors were led by first-place finishes from Bryce Bussert in the 1600 meter (5:00.02), Kelby Mezick in the 200 meter dash (23.34), Race Hudson in the 300 meter hurdles (43.28) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (3:51.04).

Gordon Central hosted Calhoun, Cass and Chattooga on Tuesday. (For details on that meet, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times). They are back at home on Saturday for the Mohawk-Warrior Invitation­al that will also include Calhoun, Sonoravill­e, Riverdale, Model, Rome, North Murray, Cass, Dalton, Coahulla Creek, Adairsvill­e, Woodland, Pepperell and Cedartown.
