Carnes’ extra-innings hit lifs Phoenix to win in region opener
The Sonoraville baseball team had to do a little extra work on Tuesday night in their Region 6-AAA opener, but it was worth it in the end thanks to a clutch hit from junior Storm Carnes.
With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Carnes stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered big time with a single to right field to score Hagan Steely for the game-winning run and a 2-1 home victory over Murray County.
Carnes had two hits and both RBIs in the contest for the Phoenix (6-2, 1-0). Grant Clark added two hits, and Chase Kirby had a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Also with single hits were Matthew Vincent, Tyler Lyles, Gavin Phillips and Steely, who got the ninth started with a single to left.
Avery Hopper started the game on the mound and got a no decision despite some great work. He went five innings and gave up one run (unearned) on four hits while striking out 11. Lyles came in to go the rest of the way and earn the win in relief as he went four innings and gave up just one hit while striking out six.
Sonoraville, who has now won six in a row, was on the road at Calhoun for a big region rivalry showdown on Thursday. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Haralson County on Friday at 5:55 p.m.

BASEBALL Ringgold 1, Calhoun 0
The Jackets lost a pitcher’s duel on Wednesday to fall in their Region 6-AAA opener.
Davis Allen went six innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out nine but took the tough-luck loss as Ringgold’s pitching held the Jackets’ offense down.
Austin Trammell had two hits for Calhoun (5-5, 0-1). Jackson Braden and Bryson Davis also had hits.
The Jackets were back home on Thursday to host rival Sonoraville. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are back on the road on Friday to face LFO at 5:55 p.m.
SOCCER Sonoraville boys 10, LFO 0
The Phoenix went on the road and got a dominant region win on Tuesday thanks to multiple goal scorers.
Sonoraville (6-4-1, 3-1) was led by Kevin Villatoro with four goals. Alexander Soldevilla and Maurilio Segura both added two goals, and Omar Jacobo and Brian Jacobo each had one goal.
Adam Schwartz had the shutout in goal with two saves for Sonoraville, who are back home on Friday to host Adairsville at 7:30 p.m.
Sonoraville girls 10, LFO 0
Sonoraville kept their momentum going with their eighth straight win on Tuesday and stayed unbeaten in the region.
The Lady Phoenix (9-1, 4-0) got five goals from Avery Hamilton to lead the way. Bailey Brewer added two goals, and Catherine Farist and Prissilla Arambul had a goal apiece.
Avery Walraven contributed two assists, and Brewer, Farist, Lacey Bell, Deya Irick and Skyler Huskins each had one.
Sonoraville is back home on Friday when they host Adairsville at 5:30 p.m. for a big region contest.
Baylor (Tenn.) boys 3, Calhoun 1
The Jackets led at the half in a tough non-region test at home on Tuesday but couldn’t hold the lead as Baylor (Tenn.) rallied for the win.
Calhoun (5-3) got their only goal in the first half from Jorge Aranda to lead 1-0 at the break. Baylor then put three goals on the board in the final 40 minutes to pull off the comeback win.
The Jackets will be on the road on Tuesday as they get back into Region 6-AAA play at Murray County at 7 p.m.
