Jackets, Lady Jackets clinch top seeds for Region 6-AAA tournament.

Calhoun Tennis sweeps tri-match; Hulsey performs well at Invitation­al

The Calhoun girls and boys tennis teams each racked up two wins on Wednesday, and in the process, they both locked up No. 1 seeds for the Region 6-AAA Tournament in a few weeks.

The Jackets and Lady Jackets hosted Ringgold and Adairsvill­e for a tri-match and swept the competitio­n.

The Calhoun girls (12-1, 9-0) won both their matches 5-0. Against Ringgold, they got singles wins from Emma King (No. 1), Marlee Nichelson ( No. 2) and Jalen Holland ( No. 3). Against Adairsvill­e, they earned singles wins from Nichelson (No. 1), King (No. 2) and Holland (No. 3). The No. 1 doubles team of Sammy Bramlett and Molly Mashburn (No. 2) and the No. 2 doubles team of Neeley Abernathy and Katlyne Greene earned wins in both matches.

The Calhoun boys (11-1, 9-0) defeated both of their opponents 4-1 on Wednesday. Earning singles wins against Adairsvill­e was Cameron LeBoeuf (No. 2) and Coen Marcus (No. 3), and doubles wins came from Matthew Turner and Aaron Lively (No. 1) and Rucker Reeves and Hunter Hartsfield ( No. 2).

The Jackets got singles wins vs. Ringgold from Luke McKenzie (No. 2) and Marcus (No. 3). Doubles wins came from Turner and Lively (No. 1) and Reeves and Matthew McCanless (No. 2).

The wins for both assures them of being the No. 1 seed at the Region 6-AAA Tournament which will be held April 10-11 at the Calhoun Tennis Center. Both teams will next host Allatoona on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

TENNIS Calhoun girls, boys beat Coahulla Creek

Both Calhoun teams hosted Coahulla Creek for big region contest on Monday and swept the visitors.

The Lady Jackets (10-1, 7-0) won 4-1 with singles victories coming from Marlee Nichelson (No. 2) and Jalen Holland (No. 3) and doubles victories coming from the team of Molly Mashburn and Sammy Bramlett (No. 1) and the team of Neeley Abernathy and Shanna Lee (No. 2).

The Calhoun boys (9-1, 7-0) swept the Colts for a 5-0 win. Getting singles wins was Luke McKenzie (No. 1), Coen Marcus (No. 2) and Aaron Lively (No. 3). Doubles victories came from Matthew Turner and Matthew McCanless (No. 1) and Rucker Reeves and Hunter Hartsfield (No. 2).

GOLF Hulsey performs well at Lady Rambler Invitation­al

Sonoravill­e’s Clara Hulsey competed in the Lady Rambler Invitation­al on Tuesday at LaFayette City Golf Course and was among the top individual performers.

The Lady Phoenix junior shot an evenpar round through nine holes (the match was shortened due to inclement weather) and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Hulsey and Sonoravill­e were back in action on Thursday at Barnsley Gardens to take on Adairsvill­e. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) Sonoravill­e will host Cartersvil­le on Monday at 4 p.m.

Sonoravill­e earns second in tri-match

The Sonoravill­e boys finished right in the mid- dle of a tri-match against Pickens and Dalton JV on Monday in a very tightly-contested round.

The Phoenix finished with a score of 170, three strokes back of Pickens and three strokes ahead of Dalton JV. Ryan Redd led the way with his first even- par round ( 36). Lane Strickland shot a 39, Blake Rouzee finished with a 45 and Alex Naymick completed the team score with a 49.

Sonoravill­e visited Barnsley Gardens to take on Adairsvill­e on Thursday. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are back at Fields Ferry to host Cartersvil­le on Monday at 4 p.m.

Gordon Central sweeps at Meadow Lakes

The Gordon Cen- tral girls and boys visited Meadow Lakes in Cedartown on Monday and each came away with a win.

The Lady Warriors shot 99 as a team to finish ahead of Pepperell (101) and Armuchee (106). Leading the way was Cierra Lawson with a 44. Abbigail Hayes shot a 55 to complete the team score. Also recording scores was Celeste Huffman (56) and Amberly Wilson (56).

The Gordon Central boys also had the low team score with a 189 to beat Pepperell (198), Armuchee (206) and Coosa (215). Josh Hardin led the team with a 44. Jordan Hardin had a 45, Stanton Walker shot a 46 and Branton Lawson added a 54.

The Gordon Central boys will compete at the Nob North Invitation­al on Saturday.

Both teams will visit Nob North on Tuesday to take on Northwest Whitfield at 5 p.m.

SOCCER Gordon Central boys 2, Pepperell 1 (PK Shootout)

The Warriors got a huge region win in clutch fashion on Monday night as they outscored Pepperell 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation as the Warriors (8-3-1) got their lone goal came from Kevin Valencia off a pass from Jairo Bautista. Following a scoreless overtime, Gordon Central converted on penalty kicks by Johnny Rivas, Bogar Aguilar and Valencia to outscore the Dragons 3-2 in the shootout. Aguilar also had two saves in the shootout.

Gordon Central is back home on Monday to host Chattooga for Senior Night at 7 p.m.

Gordon Central girls 4, Pepperell 2

The Lady Warriors got goals from four different players on Monday to earn a region victory over Pepperell.

Scoring for Gordon Central (2-10) was Gaby Cardona, Jennifer Franco, Emily Salazar and Yamilet Ramirez.

The Lady Warriors will host Chattooga on Monday at 5 p.m. for Senior Night.

Gordon Central boys 5, Rockmart 1

A hat trick from Kevin Valencia was the catalyst in a region road win on Tuesday night.

Valencia had three goals for the Warriors (9-3-1), and Johnny Rivas added two in the contest, which was called due to inclement weather with 16 minutes remaining.

Sonoravill­e girls 2, Bremen 1 (PK Shootout)

The Lady Phoenix battled for a tough road win thanks to a 3-2 advantage in a penalty kick shootout on Tuesday.

Sonoravill­e (11-1, 6-0) was tied 1-1 with the Lady Devils following regulation and overtime. Averi Walraven, Anissa Hales and Bailey Brewer then connected on their penalty kicks, and goalkeeper Sidney Stone made a great save and saw two of Bremen’s chances sail wide of the goal.

The Lady Phoenix trailed 1-0 at the half, but Avery Hamilton converted a penalty kick for the team’s lone goal in regulation to eventually force overtime.

Sonoravill­e is back home on Friday when they host Murray County at 5:30 p.m.

Sonoravill­e boys 5, Bremen 0

Sonoravill­e took care of business with a shutout on the road to earn another region win.

The Phoenix (8-4-1, 5-1) got a solid night from Kevin Villatoro with two goals and two assists to lead the way. Dawson Holbrook added two goals, and Jacob Brookshire scored the final goal.

Adam Schwartz got the shutout in goal as he recorded three saves for Sonoravill­e, who hosts Murray County on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Calhoun boys 9, Murray County 0

The Jackets visited Murray County on Wednesday and had a big offensive night to earn a region win.

Jorge Aranda had two goals to lead the way for Calhoun (6-3, 2-0). Also with goals were Daniel Isep, Johnathan Castillo, Oscar Huerta, Brock Stewart, Eric Garcia, Josue Buendia and Julio Lopez.

Assists for the Jackets came from Garcia (2), Alex Aguilar, Eduardo Fajardo, Elmer Gutierrez, Aranda and Daniel.

Calhoun will host Ringgold on Friday at 5 p.m.

TRACK Lady Warriors, Calhoun boys finish first at shortened quad meet

Calhoun hosted a quad meet on Tuesday that was called early due to inclement weather, but the Jackets and the Gordon Central girls earned enough points to finish atop their respective stand- ings.

The Calhoun boys had 56 points for a first-place finish ahead of Gordon Lee (44), Gordon Central (43) and North Murray (8). The Jackets had first-place finishes from Jason Sosa in the 1600 (5:05), Jonkell Tolbert in the triple jump (3805), CJ Fuller in the (44-07), William Long in the discus (121-10) and the 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ team (45.43). They had eight other top-three finishes.

The Lady Warriors had 60.5 points to take first ahead of Gordon Lee (43.5), Calhoun (42) and North Murray (4). Gordon Central had first-place finishes from Megan Hudson in the shot put (35-09) and the discus (112-10) and Hanna Hall in the long jump (14-04.50) to go along with eight other topthree finishes.

For the Calhoun girls, first-place finishes came from Emily Driscoll in the 3200 (14:19), Erin Hyatt in the triple jump (30-07) and the 4x100 meter relay ‘ A’ team (52.10). They had five other top-three finishes.

The Gordon Central boys had six top-three finishes.

Calhoun visited Bremen for a quad meet on Thursday, and Gordon Central hosted Pepperell, Ringgold and Dade County for a quad meet. (For details on those meets, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) Both teams will compete in the Gordon County Championsh­ip at Calhoun with field events on Wednesday starting at 4:15 p.m. and running events on Thursday starting at 4:15 p.m.
