Lady Phoenix continue strong region run with 5-0 home victory

The Sonoravill­e Lady Phoenix continued their strong season and potential region title bid with another solid 6-AAA win on Friday night at home.

The Lady Phoenix used a big second half and a hat trick from Avery Hamilton to earn a 5-0 shutout victory over Murray County to remain unbeaten in the region.

Sonoravill­e ( 12- 1, 7- 0) scored one goal in the first half with Hamilton putting one in off an assist from Prissilla Arambul, but they really put the game away with four goals in the second half. Hamilton added two more, and Averi Walraven and Catherine Farist also scored. (Farist and Hamilton both had a goal on a penalty kick.)

Farist and Bailey Brewer also had assists in the second half.

Sonoravill­e hosted Coahulla Creek on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Calvary Day for a non-region test on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

SOCCER Sonoravill­e boys 2, Murray County 0

The Phoenix dominated possession on Friday but managed to finish only two goals, which was still enough for a shutout region win at home.

Sonoravill­e (9-4-1, 6-1) outshot Murray County 22-1 in the game. Kevin Villatoro and Omar Jacobo each scored goals in the win.

The Phoenix hosted Coahulla Creek on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Windsor Forest on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in non-region action.

GOLF Calhoun, Gordon Central boys compete at Nob North Invitation­al

The Calhoun and Gordon Central boys both made the trip to Cohutta on Saturday to compete in the Nob North Invitation­al and came away with solid results.

The Jackets finished fourth in the team standings with a 341 as they were led by Avery Dodd’s 78. Drew Eickman shot an 82, Drew Gravitt added an 89 and Taylor Gresham and Will Holden both shot 92s. Luke Jones also competed and shot a 93.

The Gordon Central boys finished tied for sixth with a score of 354. Their low man was Jordan Hardin who shot a 76. Also contributi­ng to the team score was Isaac McEntyre (87), Josh Hardin (89) and Zeb Reddix (102).

Gordon Central visited Nob North as a team on Tuesday to take on Northwest Whitfield. (For details on that match, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They host Sonoravill­e, LaFayette and Adairsvill­e on Thursday at Fields Ferry at 4 p.m.

The Calhoun boys will next play on Friday at the North Murray Invitation­al at Indian Trace.

Phoenix earn convincing win over Adairsvill­e

The Sonoravill­e boys traveled to Barnsley Gardens on Thursday to take on Adairsvill­e and came away with a sound win.

The Phoenix finished with a team score of 174, 30 strokes ahead of host Adairsvill­e (204). Lane Strickland shot a 37, which included eight straight pars, to lead the team. Blake Rouzee added a 42, Ryan Redd shot a 44 and Destin Summers completed the team scoring with a 51.

Also completing rounds for the Phoenix were Alex Naymick (53), Cody Grantham (55) and Landon Ruff (59).

Sonoravill­e visited Bent Tree Golf Club on Tuesday to take on Pickens. (For details on that match, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will play in a quad match at Fields Ferry on Thursday at 4 p.m.

TRACK Warriors, Lady Warriors have big night in home quad meet

Both the Gordon Central boys and girls showed their impressive skills on Thursday at home to finish atop the team standings in a quad meet.

The Gordon Central boys finished with 141 total points to take first ahead of Ringgold (51.5), Armuchee (39.5) and Dade County (12). Leading the Warriors with first-place finishes were Kelby Mezick in the 100 meter dash (11.50) and 200 meter dash (23.56), Race Hudson in the long jump (1809.50) and 300 meter hurdles (42.19), Luke Beavers in the high jump (5-10), Alex Abat in the triple jump (33-11.50), Fredy Berganza in the shot put (36-04), Cameron Pierce in the discus (113-08), Bryce Bussert in the 1600 meter (5:02.93), Lee Ullman in the pole vault (11-00) and the 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ team (45.00). The team had 17 other top-three finishes.

On the girls side, the Lady Warriors totaled 137 points for the top spot. Ringgold (65), Armuchee (19) and Dade County (12) rounded out the scoring. First-place finishes for Gordon Central came from Megan Hudson in the shot put (36-09) and discus (108-06), Brooklyn Towe in the triple jump (27-07) and 300 meter hurdles (53.81), Claudia Cox in the 100 meter hurdles (18.81) and pole vault (7-00), Hannah Hall in the long jump (14-09.25), Ruby Deras in the 800 meter (2:54.45) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (4:44.89). They had 18 other top-three finishes.

Gordon Central will visit Calhoun on Wednesday along with Sonoravill­e as the three local teams compete in the Gordon County Championsh­ip Meet. Field events and the 3200 will be completed on Wednesday starting at 4:15 p.m., and running events will be completed on Thursday starting at 4:15 p.m.
