Jackets soccer stays undefeated in region play with 3-0 win

The Calhoun boys soccer team remained unbeaten in region play with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday over Bremen at home.

The Jackets (8-3, 4-0) got goals from Daniel Isep, Irvin Campos and Elmer Gutierrez. Providing assists were Alex Aguilar with two and Eric Garcia with one.

Calhoun’s defense was once again strong as they earned their third straight shutout and fifth shutout overall. Eduardo Fajardo recorded the clean sheet as keeper.

The Jackets were on the road on Thursday for a big region showdown at North Murray. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will have some time off before returning to region play on the road at Haralson County on April 11 at 7 p.m.

SOCCER Calhoun girls 2, Bremen 0

The Lady Jackets earned a first-half lead and held on from there for another region win on Tuesday at home.

Calhoun (6-3, 4-0) got up 2-0 at the half and played strong defense from there to turn away Bremen’s scoring chances. Mari Morales scored both goals for the Lady Jackets, and Emily Sorrow and Michelly Huitanda each had an assist.

Calhoun was at North Murray on Thursday for another 6-AAA matchup. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will next play at Haralson County on April 11 at 5 p.m.

GOLF Gordon Central battles Northwest Whitfield

Both the Gordon Central girls and boys traveled to Nob North on Tuesday to compete against Northwest Whitfield.

The Gordon Central boys won their match with a score of 176. The Bruins finished with a 186. Leading the Warriors was Isaac McEntyre with a 38. Completing the team score was Jordan Hardin (40), Zeb Reddix (48) and Stanton Walker (50). Also completing rounds were Matthew Bryson (51), Josh Hardin (52), Branton Lawson (53) and Alex Neal (59).

The Lady Warriors tied with Northwest Whitfield as both teams finished with a 164. Ciera Lawson had the low score for Gordon Central with a 51. Abbi Hayes shot a 54, and Celeste Huffman carded a 59. Amberly Wilson also shot a 62.

Gordon Central hosted a quad match on Thursday at Fields Ferry against Sonoravill­e, LaFayette and Adairsvill­e. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will compete against Calhoun at Fields Ferry on April 10.

Sonoravill­e falls to Pickens in close battle

Sonoravill­e traveled to Bent Tree Golf Club on Tues- day as they lost a very competitiv­e head to head match against Pickens.

The Phoenix shot a 187 to finish one stroke behind Pickens at 186. Lane Strickland shot the low score with a 39. Ryan Redd (42), Blake Rouzee (44) and Cody Grantham (62) rounded out the team score. Destin Summers (66) and Landon Ruff (69) also complete rounds.

Sonoravill­e was at Fields Ferry on Thursday to take on Gordon Central, LaFayette and Adairsvill­e. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will play in the North Murray Invitation­al on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

BASEBALL Coahulla Creek 1, Calhoun 0

Calhoun compiled six hits on Tuesday but couldn’t push a run across in a region loss at home.

Austin Trammell and Matthew Williams each had two hits for the Jackets (8-9, 3-4). Brett Potts and Ryan Randall added one hit apiece.

Potts also took the toughluck loss on the mound despite some great work. He went seven innings for the complete game and gave up one run on six hits while striking out 10.

The Jackets were back home on Thursday to host Adairsvill­e. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Haralson County on Friday at 5:55 p.m.

Warriors swept in doublehead­er at Dade County

Gordon Central dropped a region doublehead­er on Wednesday at Dade County, falling 14-4 in Game 1 and 15-0 in Game 2.

Leading the offense for the Warriors (0-14, 0-8) in Game 1 was Clayton Hogue with a three-run homer. Josh Temple and Lason Hefner each had a hit and a run scored.

Gordon Central was held hitless in Game 2. The Warriors hosted Trion on Thursday in a non-region contest. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They host Armuchee on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

TENNIS Calhoun sweeps Allatoona

The Jackets and Lady Jackets stepped out of region play for a good test on Wednesday at home and each came away with solid wins.

The Calhoun boys (12-1) earned a 5-0 victory with singles wins coming from Coen Marcus (No. 1), Luke McKenzie (No. 2) and Cameron LeBoeuf (No. 3). In doubles, the team of Matthew Turner and Aaron Lively (No. 1) and the team of Rucker Reeves and Hunter Hartsfield (No. 2) completed the sweep.

The Lady Jackets (13-1) defeated Allatoona 3-2. They earned all three points in singles matches with Emma King (No. 1), Marlee Nichelson (No. 2) and Jalen Holland (No. 3) all earning wins.

Both teams, which have each clinched the No. 1 seed in the Region 6-AAA Tournament that will be played April 10-11 at the Calhoun Tennis Center, were back home on Thursday to host Dalton in another non-region test. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.)
