Culberson reassigned to Minor League Camp by Dodgers

PHOENIX

— The Dodgers reassigned non-roster infielder and former Calhoun High standout Charlie Culberson to their Minor League complex on Wednesday, leaving Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor as remaining candidates to make the Opening Day roster as the backup shortstop.

Hernandez, however, is nursing a bruised right wrist, which he suffered when he was hit by a Scott Feldman pitch in Tuesday’s Cactus League game against the Reds.

Hernandez spent much of the spring with Team Puerto Rico in the World Base- ball Classic, and he’s hit only .219 in 32 spring at-bats for the Dodgers. Hernandez has an advantage over Taylor in that he can also serve as a right-handed-hitting backup center fielder to Joc Pederson.

Taylor is a natural shortstop who has hit .395 with a 1.077 OPS this spring. He’s also been tested in center field, with mixed results.

Culberson, whose walk-off home run clinched the division title for the Dodgers last year, batted .250 this spring and had been excused from workouts on Monday to join his wife for the birth of their third child.

Roster trimmed:

The Dodgers trimmed the roster before leaving Arizona on Wednesday, sending out seven players. Infielder Rob Segedin was optioned and reassigned were outfielders Tyler Holt and O’Koyea Dickson, pitcher Brandon Morrow, first basemen Cody Bellinger and Ike Davis, in addition to Culberson.
