Sonoravill­e sweeps home track meet

Sonoravill­e welcomed LFO and Coahulla Creek for a trimeet in their final warmup before Region next week, and the Phoenix and Lady Phoenix each came away with impressive results.

The Sonoravill­e boys finished with 81 points as a team to take first ahead of Coahulla Creek (38) and LFO (28).

Earning first-place finishes for the Phoenix were Tristan Key in the long jump (20-07) and the 100 meter dash (11.09), Bailey Reece in the triple jump (37-10.25), Nathan Holbert in the 400 meter (55.51), Nathan Ortiz in the 110 meter hurdles (15.41), the 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ team (44.71) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team. They had 17 other top-three finishes.

The Lady Phoenix took first in the team standings with 63 total points. They finished ahead of LFO (39) and Coahulla Creek (34).

Top finishes for the Sonoravill­e girls came from Maliyah Parks in the discus (68-01) and the triple jump (32-07.75), Faith Austin in the 100 meter dash (12.43) and the 200 meter dash (26.78), Sommer Quinn in the shot put (29-08.50), Anikia Simpson in the 400 meter (1:04) and the 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ team (50.03). They had nine other top-three finishes.

Sonoravill­e will next compete in the Region 6-AAA Meet at Calhoun High on Tuesday and Wednesday.

TRACK Calhoun competes well at five-team meet

The Calhoun girls and boys visited Southeast Whitfield for a fiveteam meet along with Chattooga, Ringgold and Heritage on Tuesday and posted solid results as a team and individual­ly.

The Lady Jackets finished with 130 total points and were led by first-place finishes from Ashlyn Barnes in the high jump (4-10) and 400 meter (1:05.03) and Erin Hyatt in the triple jump (29-04). They had nine other top-three finishes.

The Calhoun boys put up 136.5 points as a team. Their first-place finishes came from Esvin Garcia in the 1600 meter (4:57) and 800 meter (2:13) and Jevard Williams in the high jump (5-08) and 110 meter hurdles (16.20). They had eight other topthree finishes.

The Jackets and Lady Jackets will now make their final preparatio­ns for the Region 6-AAA Meet which they will host on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BASEBALL Calhoun 15, Murray County 4

The Jackets offense started early and continued to add on throughout the game to roll to a big region road win on Tuesday.

Calhoun (13-10, 8-5) scored two runs in the first to take an early lead and then added four in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to force the early mercy rule.

Leading the offensive output for the Jackets was Brett Potts and Tanner Gallman who each had 3-for-4 days. Potts had two doubles and four RBIs, and Gallman also had a double and four RBIs. Jackson Braden added two hits, including a double and scored two runs, Ryan Randall, Austin Trammell, Ben King and Tripp Hoblitzell all had a hit and an RBI apiece and Julian Ipac also drove in a run.

Potts pitched the first three innings to earn the win, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out six. Nate Bonner pitched the final two innings and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out two.

The Jackets were back home on Thursday to host North Murray in another big region test. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They finish the week on the road on Friday at Bremen at 5:30 p.m.

Southeast Whitfield 15, Gordon Central 4

The Warriors were tied 3-3 going to the third, but an eight-run inning by Southeast Whitfield completely changed the game and sent Gordon Central to a non-region loss on Monday.

Dawson Cline had three hits and four RBIs, and Josh Temple had two hits, including a double, and scored three runs to lead the offense for the Warriors (0-18). Lason Hefner also had hit and a run scored.

Zack Sisson pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the game, allowing just one hit.

Gordon Central visits Chattooga on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Coosa 17, Gordon Central 0

Gordon Central was held to just one hit as they fell in three innings on Tuesday in a region contest at home.

Dawson Cline had the lone hit for the Warriors (0-19, 0-11).

SOCCER Calhoun girls 10, Haralson County 0

The Lady Jackets scored early and often to run away with a mercy-rule shortened region win on the road on Tuesday.
