Gordon Central succeeds in final tune-up before region meet
Gordon Central hosted three other teams on Thursday for their final warm-up before the Region 6-AAA Meet and finished the regular season with some solid momentum.
The Gordon Central boys took first as a team in the quad meet while the Lady Warriors finished a close second in girls standings.
Gordon Central finished with 87.5 points in the boys standings to narrowly beat out Cartersville (85.5) for the top spot. Ringgold (43) and Model (32) rounded out the team standings.
The Warriors were led by first-place finishes from Morgan Swaim in the 800 meter (2:14.61), Kelby Mezick in the 200 meter dash (22.80), Race Hudson in the 300 meter hurdles (42.40) and Lee Ullman in the pole vault (11-00). They had 14 other top-three finishes.
The Gordon Central girls scored 82 points as team to finish second behind Cartersville (93). Ringgold (58) and Model (13) completed the girls team standings.
The Lady Warriors had first-place finishes from Megan Hudson in the shot put (34-11.50) and discus (105-11), Cameron Luna in the 400 meter (1:04.97) and Brooklyn Towe in the 300 meter hurdles (42.40). They had 12 other top-three finishes.
Gordon Central will next compete in the Region 6-AAA Meet which will be Wednesday and Thursday at Gordon Central as Class AAA Sectionals berths will be on the line.

GOLF Calhoun, Sonoraville compete in tri-match
Calhoun and Sonoraville both welcomed Adairsville to Fields Ferry on Thursday for a tri-match.
In the boys competition, Calhoun finished first with a team score of 156. Sonoraville took second with a 164, and Adairsville shot a 298 for third.
The Jackets were led by Hayden Hayes who shot a one-under 35. Drew Eickman carded a 39, and Avery Dodd and Taylor Gresham each shot a 41 to round out the team score. Also competing for Calhoun was Luke Jones (41), Alex Repp (45) and Drew Gravitt (48).
Sonoraville’s boys got their low score from Blake Rouzee with an even-par 36. Ryan Redd (42), Lane Strickland (43) and Destin Summers (43) completed the Phoenix team score. Paxton Jarrett (50), Cody Grantham (55) and Landon Ruff (56) also completed rounds.
The Calhoun girls shot a 166 as a team with Kate Mashburn’s 36 leading the way. Katie Kauffman (41), Maddie Crump (42) and Molly Mashburn (47) completed the team score. Ella Bennett also shot a 56.
Sonoraville’s Clara Hulsey competed as an individual and shot a 39.
Calhoun’s girls competed in the Nob North Invitational on Tuesday. (For details on that tournament, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times). Calhoun and Sonoraville will both be at the Calhoun Elks Club on Thursday along with Gordon Central for Day 1 of the City/County Tournament starting at 4 p.m.
BASEBALL Sonoraville 8, Adairsville 7
Sonoraville scored four runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead and stay there for a big region road win on Thursday.
The Phoenix (9-12, 4-10) trailed 6-4 going to the sixth but strung together some great at-bats in the frame for four-run rally to turn the game around. Adairsville scored a run in the bottom half to cut the deficit to one but couldn’t get any closer as Sonoraville starter Grant Clark shut them down from there.
Clark finished out the complete game on the mound to earn the win. He went seven innings and gave up seven runs on 12 hits while striking out seven.
Gavin Phillips led the offense with two hits, including a triple, with an RBI and a run scored. Clark and Gage Soulios each had two hits, including a double, and an RBI, and Matthew Vincent added two hits and an RBI. Storm Carnes and Wyatt Castoe had a hit and an RBI apiece as well.
The Phoenix were on the road on Tuesday at Ringgold (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They were back home on Thursday to host North Murray at 5:55 p.m.
Calhoun 8, Bremen 2
The Jackets had to go to extra innings on Friday, but their offense put together a big inning when they needed to most, scoring six runs in the ninth to earn a region road win.
The game was tied 1-1 after seven, and then both teams scored a run in the eighth to send it to another extra frame before Calhoun (15-10, 10-5) had the big ninth for the defining inning of the game.
Leading the Jackets offense was Austin Trammell and Jackson Braden, who both had three hits. Trammell drove in three runs, and Braden drove in one. Brett Potts added an RBI-triple, Bryson Davis had a double and two runs scored and Ryan Randall and Carson Kemp each contributed a hit and an RBI.
Braden was even bigger on the mound, where he went all nine innings for the extra-inning, complete-game win. He allowed two runs ( one earned) on nine hits while striking out an impressive 13.
Calhoun was on the road again on Tuesday at Coahulla Creek. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Adairsville on Thursday at 5:55 p.m.
Sonoraville 5, LFO 3
The Phoenix offense built an early lead and the pitching held up from there for a region win at home on Friday.
Sonoraville (10-12, 5-10) scored all five of their runs in the first three innings, with two in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Wyatt Castoe started on the mound and earned the win by going six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out three. Avery Hopper earned the save by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Tyler Lyles led the Sonoraville offense with two hits, including a triple, to go with three RBIs. Chase Kirby also had two hits with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Matthew Vincent drove in a run and Storm Carnes, Grant Clark, Gavin Phillips, Wyatt Castoe and Grant Hegwood also had hits.
