- By Brandi Owczarz

Gordon County Administrator John King, who has served in the position since February 2014, turned in his resignation during an executive session of the Gordon County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday night.

During his tenure, King has successfully oversaw and completed many major projects, including the rebuilding of the downtown parking deck, which re-opened in May 2014 after the upper level collapsed during a heavy snow in early 2011. The new parking deck, built from the 2012 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, came in under the $2.6 million budget that was passed by voters at $2,070,000.

King also oversaw the building of Red Bud Fire Station 6, located at the corner of Cash Road and Red Bud Road, which officially opened in January 2016. The SPLOST approved project is a 9700-square-foot structure that provided the firefighters at the Red Bud station much needed modernization, including three bays for trucks, six individual bedrooms, a living area and kitchen and a training room.

King’s final project, the Gordon County Government Plaza, formerly the BB&T Building in downtown Calhoun, which now houses the office of Gordon County Tax Commissioner, Property Assessor and Gordon County Voter Registration and Elections office, all formerly housed in the Gordon County Courthouse Annex. The building was purchased and renovated with SPLOST funds to provide flex space while the Gordon County Courthouse, another SPLOST approved project, is renovated.

“It is with great sadness to this Board that after three years of working with Mr. King, he has turned in a resignation letter to the County,” said Board Chair Becky Hood. “Nobody is leaving on ill terms. We love John and we hate to see him go. It’s been a pleasure serving with him.”

“You guys have given me a wonderful opportunity,” King told the Board. “It has been great and I really enjoyed
