Local athletic accomplishments; Tucker, Kremer stories
Region Championships and Individual Performances
The 2016-17 school year is about to come to a close. No year passes into history without leaving a great record of accomplishments in athletics, academics or the performing arts. The news coverage in the Times is more than adequate in reporting accomplishments in all those areas. It is reading of the two editions each week of the paper to which I turn to learn about teams, people and events of Calhoun and Gordon County to which I have no opportunity to observe in person or hear about.
I will leave it up to Alex Farrer, Tyler Serritt and Brandi Owczarz to report the stories. And for all those who say there is nothing in the paper, I would like to take a test with you concerning local events in our world of sports, crime, academics, government or religion. The test would cover things reported in the paper that most would know nothing about if not available for us to read. Feature articles concerning persons in our county are always of interest.
I refer now to the stories of athletic teams from all our schools and in all areas. The stories of region championships in events of the spring and the performances of individuals in our schools present items of interest far beyond that of family. And with the end of a school year there will be stories of accomplishments. All coaches, participants, parents and fans have a reason to be proud.
Coach Ray Tucker and Coach Jim Kremer
Staff Writer Tyler Ser- ritt’s story last week of Coach Ray Tucker retiring from his head coaching position in basketball at Gordon Central was outstanding in capturing the facts of Coach Tucker’s career and sharing some of the great sentiments of one of the prominent personalities on the athletic scene in Northwest Georgia.
The comments and observations I could make about Coach Tucker and my admiration of him and the contributions he has made on the athletic scene in Gordon County and the area would be from one who has watched his career with interest from up close and personal.
That observation would begin with his high school days when he played for Lafayette… remember I am several years older than Coach Tucker.
Coach Tucker came to Calhoun High in 1979 as head basketball coach and teacher in the math department. I encourage everyone to read the article about Coach Tucker. The article sets forth the facts, in text and tone, of Coach Tucker’s career.
