Calhoun-Gordon County’s local chapter of the American Cancer Society will reinvent a legacy fundraiser when it presents “Fight to Win” in observation of National Cancer Survivor Day on Sunday, June 4, 2017 in the historic GEM Theatre. The fundraiser will begin with a silent auction inside Velo Vineyard at 2 p.m. and the fashion show itself will start at 3 p.m. in the theatre. The show will feature many community members modeling in celebration of their own victory, or in memory and honor of a family member. Admission is $15 per person and all proceeds benefit the Gordon County Relay for Life.

“Gordon Hospital quickly stepped forward as the premier sponsor of our fundraiser,” said Kayren Vinson, who has joined forces with Deborah Bell, Barbara Clark, Cathy Swann and Melissa Vinson to organize the event. “We are so grateful to the hospital, as well as Chick-fil-A of Calhoun, the City of Calhoun, First Bank of Calhoun and an anonymous sponsor. We hope this renewal of a longstanding fundraiser will be a great success and position us to bring the tradition back.”

Models include Barbara Balliew, Kayla Bell, Lacey Bell, Susan Bennett, Deborah Campbell, Joe and Sherry Campbell with family members, Barbara Clark, Laurel Clark, Gina Crider, Fran Edwards, Cassie Ferguson, the Mike Jones Family, Jaime Garrett, Becky Gilbert, Jason Hawkins, Rita Howard, Judy Jackson, Sharon King, Michelle Knight, Dave Lee, Judith McBee, Olivia Meadows, Sue Morgan, Alexis Owens and Cassandra Parker.

Also modeling will be Bill and Betty Payne family members, Teresa Petty, Bridgett Phillips, Alfie Pierce, Suzanne Roberts, Diane Smith, Joan-Woody Summer, Tammy Turner, Gina Fox West, Susan Carter-Winthrow and Dena Wright. The models will be escorted by Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Bateman with the Department of Defense, as well as other community volunteers. New models will be accepted through May 15 and should text their interest to Kayren Vinson at 678-986-2381.

Local businesses have come forward to support the event. Allison Hall and Jennifer Dixon, Mary Kay Cosmetics representatives, will be available to help the models with final touches and several retailers are discounting outfits purchased for the show. Those generous retailers include Cheyenne’s, Cotton and Twine, Reese’s Fashion Gallery, Rusty Zipper and Tot Roost.

The silent auction, which will include coffee and desserts, is being organized by Deborah Bell. Items are still being accepted and so far, the bounty includes gifts from Barnsley Resort, Andy Baxter Photography, Mary Kay cosmetics, floral arrangements by Cassie, a free mountain retreat weekend, bookbags filled with school supplies, a basket full of Pinterest items and more. Donors also may text information about their gifts to Kayren Vinson at 678-986-2381.

The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 by 10 doctors and five laypeople in New York City. It was called the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC). At that time, a cancer diagnosis meant near certain death. Its mission has always been clear: to save lives. The American Cancer Society provides information, answers and hope.
