Silvanus “Shorty” Welchel

Mr. Silvanus “Shorty” Arnold Welchel, 76, of Plainville, died Sunday, May 07, 2017 at Floyd Medical Center following four years of declining health. He was born in Cherokee County on Oct. 14, 1940, son of the late Solomon and Oveline Cox Welchel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Lewis Welchel, Alton Welchel, Jack Welchel, Otis Welchel, Martha Jones and Willie Dee Carisle.

He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Lois Garland Welchel; his daughter and son- inlaw, Diann and Roger Johns of Plainville; his brothers and sisters- in- law, Bobby and Mildred Welchel of Rome, and Chester and Carol Welchel of Jasper; his sisters and brothers- inlaw, Cordella Hightower and Ophillia Bowling, both of Plainville, Gladys and Fred Blalock of Waleska, and Colline and Jacky Cantrell of Jasper; grandchild­ren, April Hudson ( Jason), and Matthew Johns; and great- grandchild­ren, Taylor Hudson, Greyson Hudson, Ryan Johns, Kyle Johns, and Candace Johns. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Silvanus “Shorty” Arnold Welchel were held Tuesday, May 9 at 11 a. m. from Scott Cemetery, with Rev. Eddie Brannon officiatin­g. Pallbearer­s serving included Matthew Johns, Jason Hudson, Ronnie Jones, Von Garland, Nathanial Allen and Jeremy Defoor. Honorary pallbearer­s are Bobby Welchel and Chester Welchel.

The family received friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Monday, May 8 from 12 noon until 7 p. m.
