Calhoun High School students inducted into National Honor Society

- Staff Reports

Calhoun High School’s annual induction ceremony for the National Honor Society was held on April 14, 2017 at 2 p. m. at First Methodist Church of Calhoun. A total of 35 students were inducted into the school’s chapter.

To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 95. Additionally, candidates must meet high standards of service, leadership and character.

Leadership is based on the student’s participation in two or more community or school activities, or election to an office. To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in three or more service projects in the school and community. Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty.

Students are reviewed by a faculty council consisting of five members of the faculty appointed by the principal.

As members of NHS, these students will now engage in a number of individual and chapter service projects. The Calhoun High School Chapter sells pecans each fall to raise money to support a number of local families at Christmas, buy school supplies, and to fund scholarships. Students collect clothing throughout the year to help local families. Operation Christmas Child is a throughout- the- year project as well that helps children around the world.

Dr. Dobson stated “These projects have helped many of our local community families during a time of struggle. The clothes are separated for use at all of the Calhoun City School sites. NHS students love going shopping for children at Christmas. They truly are able to give back to the community.”

NHS is the nation’s oldest and best- known student recognition program and was founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
