State baseball finals to be held at State Mutual Stadium

- By Tommy Romanach

— The home of the Rome Braves is the typical spot to catch some of minor league baseball’s youngest stars. But this week will see the spotlight placed on the state’s best high school players.

State Mutual Stadium is home to half of the GHSA Baseball State Championships beginning Wednesday. The stadium will host four best-of-three championship series, with each one starting with a doubleheader either Wednesday or Thursday and a decisive Game 3 on Saturday if needed.

Wednesday’s action will begin with the Class 6A series between Pope and Lee County with Game 1 beginning at 11 a.m. Lee has gone 8-2 in the playoffs after winning the Region 1-6A title, while Region 7-6A champion Pope has won 10 of its last 11 contests.

Those games are followed by the Class 7A doubleheader between Etowah and Woodstock with Game 1 scheduled for 5 p.m.

Both teams hail from Region 4-7A, with Woodstock taking two out of three in the regular season.

Thursday will begin with the Class A Public title series between Gordon Lee and Schley County starting at 11 a.m. The two teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 before the tournament began, with both combining for only eight losses all year.

The final matchup is the Class 4A series between Blessed Trinity and Marist, with Game 1 at 5 p.m. The two private schools finished first and second in Region 7-4A this season, with Blessed Trinity winning two of three games.

Tickets to the championship games are $12 per day and $7 for the “if necessary” games on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium or online at gofan.com.
