-

Georgia 4- H, in conjunction with the Arby’s Foundation and the Georgia Food Bank Association, are hosting a Pantry Pride Recipe Contest. The objectives of this contest are four- fold: ( 1) raise awareness among 4- H’ers about poverty, hunger, and the underprivileged in Georgia, ( 2) challenge 4- H’ers to think creatively about food and cooking by developing or reinventing recipes using ingredients commonly found in Georgia Food Banks, ( 3) educate 4- H’ers about the cost of food and what it takes to feed a family, and ( 4) provide youth and families across Georgia with a recipe bank for inexpensive nutritious meals. For those in 4th- 6th grade, participants will create a recipe for a no cook snack using at least one ingredient from the list of foods commonly found in Georgia Food Banks. Those in 7th- 8th grade will create a recipe for a simple cooked entrée using two ingredients found on the list, and those in high school will create a recipe for a cooked entrée using three ingredients found on the list. Recipes must be submitted to the Gordon County 4- H office by July 31 in order to be considered for the contest. All recipes received by the deadline will be included in a digital cookbook and all participants will receive special prizes for participating. For high school 4- H’ers participating, all recipes will be reviewed by a committee and the top 16 will be invited to a state cook- off contest that will be held at the Georgia National Fair on Sunday, Oct. 8. Recipes will be scored on use of food bank items in the recipe, appeal, creativity, flavor, technique/ presentation, budget, and time limit. The first place winner will be videoed preparing their recipe at the Georgia Department of Agriculture kitchen for the Georgia Farm Bureau “Meals from the Field” segment.
