Local trio named to AAA All-State Team

The local area produced some of the best female golfers in the state of Georgia this past season, and postseason honors announced last week proved it.

Three local golfers were named to the Georgia High School Golf Coaches Associatio­n Class AAA All-State Team last week. The list included Calhoun’s Kate Mashburn and Maddie Crump and Sonoravill­e’s Clara Hulsey.

Mashburn and Crump, both seniors, helped lead the Lady Jackets to their third straight Class AAA State title in May. Calhoun shot a 509 as a team over two rounds to take the title by 13 strokes at the Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. Mashburn led the way by shooting a 154 (77-77) to finish tied for second individual­ly.

Crump shot a 181 (96-85) to finish tied for 18th.

Hulsey qualified for the State Tournament as an individual for the Lady Phoenix after shooting a 76 to take second at the Area 4-AAA Tournament at Fields Ferry. It was her third straight trip to the state tournament, and she wrapped up her junior season by firing a 170 (86-84) to earn a ninth-place finish.

Four other golfers from Calhoun and Sonoravill­e’s area joined the locals on the Class AAA All-State Team. They were Murray County’s Tori Owens, North Murray’s Savannah Satterfiel­d, Ringgold’s Miranda Rich and Westminste­r’s Ashley Jian.

Rounding out the list was Rutland’s Carol Pyon, who was the individual state champion after shooting a 146 (74-72) at the state tournament.

Mashburn, Hulsey compete in U.S. Girls Amateur Qualifier

Local golfers Kate Mashburn and Clara Hulsey tested their skills against some of the top junior golfers in the world on Monday as they competed in the U.S. Girls Amateur Qualifier at the Cartersvil­le Country Club.

The top five individual finishers in the tournament qualified for the USGA U.S. Girls’ Junior Championsh­ip, which will be played in late July in Augusta, Mo. The next two highest finishers earned alternate spots.

Mashburn and Hulsey fell short of qualifying with Mashburn shooting an 82 (+10) and Hulsey carding an 85 (+13).

The top five finishers who earned a spot in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championsh­ip were Elizabeth Moon (Forrest City, Ark.) at 66, Lois Kaye Go (Phillippin­es) at 67, Ximena Gonzalez (Mexico) at 68, So Whi Kang (Republic of Korea) at 70 and Ivy Shepherd (Peachtree City, Ga.) at 71.

The first and second alternates were Louise Yu (Duluth, Ga.) and Savannah Hylton (Hilton Head, S.C.) who each shot a 72.

Lamb, Nance tie for runner-up finish at Coosa Invitation­al

Calhoun High alums Tre Lamb and Nash Nance each had solid tournament­s over the weekend to finish tied for runner-up honors in the open division of the Coosa Invitation­al at the Coosa Country Club in Rome.

Lamb led the tournament after the first round on Saturday following a round of 68 and then completed the tournament with a 70 for a total of 138. Nance also shot a 138 (71-67) to tie Lamb for second.

The pair finished five strokes behind champion David Noll Jr. who carded a 133, finishing the tournament with an impressive second-round 64.

Calhoun High alum Mike Nance shot a 142 (67-75) to take a second-place finish in the senior division behind champion Larry Clark who shot a 140 (69-71).
