Bruce Kelley

Bruce R. Kelley, age 63, of Calhoun, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in Hamilton Medical Center.

Bruce was born on Aug. 19, 1953 to the late Frank Kelley and Ruby Cochran Kelley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Kelley and Morris Kelley. Bruce was the former police chief of Fairmount, serving for 20 years, and was the owner of BRK Auto.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Betty Herndon Kelley of Calhoun; two sons, Brandon Kelley and Dustin Kelley; three daughters, Miranda Kelley, Jessica Howell and Valerie Young; and ten grandchildren, Bryan Howell, Tyler Kelley, Ashley Howell, Kayleigh Kelley, Dawson Young, Chase Roberson, Kolter Kelley, Camden Cusick, Will Howell and Parker Young.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, June 30 at 2 p. m. from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Reverend Deron Henson officiating. Sally Jones will have charge of music. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery with full police honors afforded by the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department honor guard.

Pallbearers serving will be Rodney Kelley, Mark Herndon, Kin Quinton, Johnny Weaver, Jack Bird and Robert Paris.

Max Guess

Mr. Max “Hoakie” Guess, 81, of Oakman, passed into God’s loving embrace on Monday evening, June 26, 2017, at his home after a difficult struggle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Preceding him in death are his parents, Mike and Alyce Leah Owens Guess; his brothers, Jack Guess and Tommy Guess; and sisters, Gwen Penley, Iris ( Jimmy) Hartley and Faye Martin.

The youngest son of Mike “Beady” Guess and Alyce Leah Owens, Max was born and raised in Oakman, alongside his seven siblings. His mother was a homemaker and his father was a woodsman and farmer. Max took up both of his father’s trades; with Hubert Langley, he built the Dalton Pulp Wood Company, and with his wife of 55 years, Dianne Corteau Guess, he built the Guess Brothers Timber Company, and a homestead where they raised cattle and children. He was a veteran, serving his country in the United States Army.

Dianne and their three children, Dixie Guess of Calhoun, Tad Guess of Ranger and Chad Guess and his wife, Jessy, of Ranger, survive him. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Crystal and Nic Alday, Jack and Lizzie Guess, Logan Guess, Maggie Guess, and Shelbie Guess; his daughtersin- law, Jessica Guess and Melanie King; and his two sisters, Christine Stone of Oakman, and Phoebe Sullivan of Sylverena, Miss. Four greatgranddogs, Max, Baby, Phyrne and Loki; and several nieces, nephews, and Melanie King also survive.

Hoakie was a larger than life sort of man, and one of a kind at that. He will be missed beyond the measure of words, as will his smoked trout and laughter.

Services to honor the life of Mr. Max “Hoakie” Guess were held Thursday, June 29 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Jether Cochran and Crystal Rose Alday officiating. Military honors were rendered by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers included Nic Alday, Jack Guess, Logan Guess, Melanie King, Noah Johnson and Corey Penley.

The Guess family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 28 from 5 until 8 p. m.

Evelyn Davenport

Mrs. Evelyn Tuggle Davenport, age 71, of Calhoun, departed this life, Monday morning June 26, 2017 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. Evelyn was born April 21, 1946 in Calhoun, a daughter of the late Millard and Gladys Austin Tuggle. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Colene Casey and her father- in- law and mother-in-law, Reverend Warren and Anna Mae Davenport.

Evelyn was a 1964 graduate of Valley Point High School. She received her four year degree in criminal justice from Brenau College. She proudly served her country in the U. S. Army. She was a policewoman with the Dalton City Police for fifteen years. Evelyn was elected two terms and served the people of Whitfield County as the Whitfield County Probate Judge. She worked at Hayes State Prison for several years and later retired from the Department of Family and Children Services in Floyd and Catoosa Counties. She was a member of Sugar Valley Baptist Church.

Evelyn lived a life of service to others and the true love of her life was her family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Tommy Davenport of the residence; sons and daughter- in- law, Wesley Davenport of Calhoun, Bill and Cindy Davenport of Dalton; grandchildren, Josh and Emily Kinsey, Justin Davenport and Josiah Davenport; great- grandson, Kayden Davenport; sisters and brothers- in- law, Brenda and Jess Roegrer, Helen and Roy Ingle all of Resaca; brothers- in- law and sisters- in- law, Phil and Deborah Davenport of Rocky Face, Rick and Judy Davenport, Jim and Bunny Davenport all of Dalton, and Annette Davenport of Newnan; special cousins, Ray and Mary Tuggle of Muscle Sholes, Ala.; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Evelyn Davenport were held Thursday morning, June 29, 2017 at 11 a. m. at Sugar Valley Baptist Church with Reverend Mitch Phillips and Reverend Delmar Davenport officiating. She was laid to rest at Chandler Cemetery with Josh Kinsey, Justin Davenport, Mitch Hasty, Britt Hasty, Jody Davenport and Jeff Fowler serving as pallbearers.

The family received friends at Sugar Valley Baptist Church from 5 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening and after 10 a.m. Thursday morning until the service hour.

Cathy Brown

Mrs. Catherine “Cathy” Mary Brown, age 52, of Resaca, departed this life, Saturday, June 17, 2017 at her home. Cathy was born Oct. 24, 1964 in Hammond, Ind. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara J Shay Bryant, brother-in-law, Jimmy Brown; nephew, Jonathan McKay. Cathy enjoyed nursing, and the help she was able to give people who needed it the most. She had a very giving sprit about her and help as many people as she was able to help. Cathy enjoyed cross stitching, needle point and collecting bells. And her loved extended to her pets.

Mrs. Catherine “Cathy” Mary Brown is survived by her husband, Steve Brown; father, Robert Victor; sons, Chad Brown and his fiancé, Savanna Scoon; Eric Austin Brown; daughters, Elizabeth Trotter, Jennifer Lomand, Amber Brown and her husband, Zack Chapman; brothers, Jeff and Kathleen Victor, Greg and Toni Victor; sisters, Robin and Kenny Satterfield, Cindy McKay, Susan Blanton; she is also survived by her four grand- daughters.

A celebration of life memorial service for Mrs. Catherine “Cathy” Mary Brown, will be held Sunday July 2, 2017 at 2 p. m. from Ponders Melrose Chapel.

Hildreth Woods

Mrs. Hildreth Floyd Woods, 95, of Plainville, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Mrs. Woods was born in Plainville on May 25, 1922, where she was delivered on the same night and by the same doctor as her late husband, Ellis Z. Woods. She is the daughter of the late Molly and Ray Floyd. She was a graduate of Plainville High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class. She worked at Brighton Mills, Shannon from 1940 until 1952 and then went on to be a homemaker and substitute teacher at Plainville School. She was a charter member of Plainville Independent Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for 30 years.

Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ellis Z. Woods, in 2011. She was also preceded by two brothers, Hoyt and Jerry Floyd, and two sisters, Mildred and Louis Floyd. Survivors include: one daughter, Pam Woods Treglown, and her husband, Jim, of Plainville; two granddaughters, Stephanie Treglown Pearson and her husband, Justin, of Adairsville, and Megan Treglown of Plainville; and two great- grandchildren, Caden and Callie Pearson. She is also survived by her two sisters, Clemmie Wright and Betty Byerly of Plainville; and a brother, Lex Floyd and his wife, Jean, of Shannon. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Woods was blessed with several loving caregivers, Cindy Gossage, Pam Byerly, Emma Copeland and Wendy Bramlett.

Mrs. Woods was a long- time resident and friends of the Plainville Community. She had an enormous heart, particularly when it came to family and friends.

Visitation will be at Plainville Independent Methodist Church on Friday, June 30, from 2 p. m. until the funeral hour at 4 p. m.. Funeral Services will follow with the Reverend Ted Fuller and Reverend Travis Hyde officiating. Graveside Services will be held after at Franklin Cemetery. Pallbearers will include: Justin Pearson, Terrelle Byerley, Chad Floyd, Dempsey Wright, Wally Voelker, Fay Autry and Tim Fuller. Music will be provided by Angie Childers and Amber Lee.

Flowers will be accepted; however, Mrs. Woods would have appreciated donations made to Plainville Independent Methodist Church.

Toni Waters

Mrs. Toni Marie Larson Waters, born on Jan. 15, 1955 in Gainesville, Fla., passed away peacefully at the age of 62 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on June 22, 2017 after a brave battle with cancer.

Mrs. Waters is survived by her loving husband, Chauncey Waters, of Jasper; father, Rev. Al Larson of Jasper; son and daughter- in- law, Cory and Cat Dey of Ft. Leonard, Mo.; brothers, Phil Larson of Jasper and Brett Larson of Savannah; stepson, Lee and Michelle Waters of Canton; stepdaughters, Susan and Rocky Barnes of Douglasville and Vangie and Kenneth Agan of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; unofficial adopted sister, Bonnie Burgamy of Franklin, N. C.; six grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. June 22, 2017 at Jasper United Methodist Church.
