Calhoun softball makes big statement in season opener
The Calhoun Lady Jackets opened the regular season with an explosive statement on Tuesday.
Calhoun visited Murray County and pounded out 19 runs on 12 hits for a 19-0 mercy-rule shortened victory in four innings. The Lady Jackets (1-0) hit three homers, two doubles and had four players with multiple hits.
Leading the offense for Calhoun was Adella Carver who had a five-RBI night thanks to a home run and a double. She also stole two bases.
Alaina Reece had a 3-for4 night with a homer and three RBIs, and Blair Hall also had two hits with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Erin Barnes was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, Maddie Bumgardner added a double, two RBIs and three runs scored and Anna Taylor drove in a run and scored two runs. Carlie Henderson had a hit and a run scored, Molly Walker added a hit and Tori Roper walked twice and scored two runs.
The performance in the circle was just as dominant as Torri Gaddis earned the win with three scoreless innings as she struck out four and only allowed one hit. Mag- gie McBrayer came on in the fourth inning and provided one frame of scoreless relief while striking out two.
The Lady Jackets were back at home on Thursday to host LFO. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They host Coahulla Creek on Monday at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL Sonoraville at Ringgold game postponed
The Lady Phoenix were scheduled to open their regular season on Tuesday at Ringgold, but Mother Nature had other plans as the game was postponed due to rain.
The game will be made up on Saturday at 5 p.m. Sonoraville was scheduled to play their first game at home on Thursday against North Murray. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Murray County on Monday at 5:55 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL Lady Jackets split in tri-match
The Calhoun Lady Jackets traveled to Chattooga for a season-opening tri-match against the host Lady Indians and Rome and came away with a 1-1 split for the night.
Calhoun fell to Chattooga in three sets 2-1 but bounced back with a three-set victory over Rome. Calhoun coach Randy Rice said his team had a few season-opening jitters that didn’t allow them to play to their full potential, but hopefully his team would get back on track soon. Standouts in the tri-match for the Lady Jackets were Erin Davis and Ashton Ensley.
Calhoun was back on the road for another tri-match on Thursday at Model along with Cedartown. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Armuchee on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
