Qualifying begins next Monday for upcoming General Municipal Election

Qualifying begins Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 for several cities throughout Gordon County for the upcoming General Municipal Election, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.

A municipal election is held for towns, cities or other special districts and is held in odd-numbered years.

Various council seats in the City of Calhoun, City of Plainville, City of Fairmount and Town of Resaca are up for re- election, as well as a few seats on the City of Calhoun Board of Education.

The qualifying period for those considerin­g a run for all municipal offices opens on Monday, Aug. 21 at 8: 30 a. m. and ends on Friday, Aug. 25 at 4: 30 p. m. To qualify for a municipal office, interested persons must qualify at their city’s City/ Town Hall by filling out paperwork and paying a qualifying fee.

In the City of Calhoun, Council Post # 3, currently held by Matt Barton, is up for re- election, as well as Council Post #4, currently held by David Hammond. To qualify, a $ 252 fee is required. Qualifying will be held at Calhoun City Hall, located at 226 South Wall Street in Calhoun during the qualifying period. Calhoun City Hall is open Monday - Friday, 8 a. m. - 5 p. m.

The City of Calhoun holds council meetings on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Depot Community Room, located at 109 S. King Street in downtown Calhoun. Council meetings begin at 7 p. m.

The City of Calhoun Board of Education has three seats up for re- election: School Board Post # 1, currently held by Alvin Long, School Board Post #2, currently held by Rhoda Washington and School Board Post #3, currently held by David Scoggins. The qualifying fee for school board is set at $ 1. Qualifying is held at Calhoun City Hall, located at 226 South Wall Street in Calhoun during the qualifying period. Calhoun City Hall is open Monday - Friday, 8 a. m. - 5 p. m.

The City of Plainville has two posts up for re- election: Council Post # 3, currently held by James R. Miller, and Council Post # 4, currently held by Frances Fossett. The qualifying fee is set at $ 15. To qualify, visit Plainville City Hall, located at 110 Earl Street in Plainville during the qualifying period. Plainville City Hall is open Monday - Friday, 8 a. m. - 5 p. m.

Plainville City Council holds council meetings on the first Monday of each month at 6 p. m. at Plainville City Hall.
