Tangible exhibit at Harris Arts Center to showcase McFarland photographs
Some rabbit holes are deep. Calhoun resident Keith McFarland tumbled into such a hole several years ago when, on a whim, he purchased a Mamiya medium format camera. He was instantly hooked, so much so that part of his home is now a darkroom. He develops his own film and uses one of two enlargers to make silver gelatin prints.
The result of that fortuitous trip down the rabbit hole is a selection of stunning photographic images. Whether he is capturing the breathtaking expanse of a landscape in black and white or a delicate yet mysterious, richly colored portrait, McFarland brings both an artist’s eye and a technician’s mastery to his work.
The Calhoun and Gordon County community will be afforded the opportunity to witness McFarland’s artistry at Harris Arts Center Aug. 23 – Oct. 20 when the Visual Arts Guild presents the exhibit “Tangible.” The public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday, Aug. 27 from 3 - 4: 30 p. m.
In a society which relies more and more on smartphone selfies and Instagram filters to capture the world, McFarland’s use of film cameras and hands- on darkroom photo processing makes his approach unique. He will share information about his techniques and processes for both film and digital photography at a gallery talk at 3: 30 p. m. during the opening reception on Aug. 27. He will also be available for informal questions and commentary throughout the reception.
Harris Arts Center is located at 212 South Wall Street in Calhoun, Georgia 30701. For further information on the exhibit, call 706629- 2599.
