Sonoraville snaps losing skid with split at tri-match

The Lady Phoenix needed a win to regain some confidence and after dropping their first match to Bremen on Tuesday night, they got the win they needed to break a nine-match losing streak as the dispatched of Paulding County.

In the first match of the night, Sonoraville (4-12, 0-2) lost in three sets (18-25, 26-25, 12-25) to area frontrunner Bremen. But they didn’t hang their heads as they bounced back to defeat Paulding County in a non-area match in two sets (25-21, 25-12).

“Bremen is the top team in our area right now, and we put up a great fight against them,” said Sonoraville coach Trace Vaughn. “We had an opportunity to take the first set and let it slip away. It was really a match we could have won, and we just didn’t finish. It was a defensive battle, and we played much more loose and had more fun than we’ve had the last couple of weeks. We took care of business with Paulding and kind of got the monkey off our back with a win. If we play like we did tonight, we will give a lot of teams trouble.”

Skylar Huskins paced the effort with nine kills, seven digs and four aces; Anissa Hales had 19 digs; Bree Steely had 14 assists and three kills; Kinsey Wilson had 13 digs and four kills; Alea Johnson had five assists and four kills; Hannah Wehunt had 10 digs; Abby Chambers had four kills and three aces; and Raleigh Hooper had four kills.

The Lady Phoenix were back in action on Thursday at Adairsville in a quad match along with Therell and North Paulding. (For details on those matches, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be back home next Thursday (Sept. 7) when they host Calhoun and Union County at 5 p.m.

SOFTBALL Sonoraville 8, North Murray 0

Sonoraville held North Murray scoreless for the entire game and then exploded for an eight-run sixth to earn a big region crossover win on Monday.

The Lady Phoenix (7-7) got a dominant complete-game effort from Kristen Davis in the circle as she went six innings and only allowed one hit while striking out seven. Her offense then gave her all the support she needed in the sixth as they put together a huge inning to force the mercy rule.
