Georgia 4-H Food Showcase
On Saturday, September 9, Georgia 4-H will be holding its annual Food Showcase. Composed of four different contests, the event will be held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center and 4-H’ers may compete in one of the three morning contests consisting of Egg Preparation Demonstration (Junior and Senior 4-H’ers), Chicken Barbecue Contest (Senior 4-H’ers) or Turkey Barbecue Contest (Senior 4-H’ers). 4-H’ers may also participate as county Junior and Senior teams in the Georgia 4-H Food Challenge competition.
The Egg Preparation Demonstration is a contest where participants present an 8-12 minute demonstration on the preparation of an egg dish, after which the judges sample a finished dish that used eggs in the recipe.
Participants in the Chicken Barbecue and Turkey Barbecue Contests are given 2.5 hours to prepare fillets (turkey) or halves (chicken) for judging on sensory evaluation and barbecue skills, following which they must provide a ten minute presentation relevant to the contest on a topic such as the broiler or turkey industry, safe food preparation skills, and poultry nutrition information.
The final contest, the Georgia 4-H Food Challenge, is similar to the TV show Chopped! Teams of four participants receive a mystery basket of ingredients related to a category of food: Main Dish, Fruits and Vegetables, Bread and Cereal, and Nutritious Snacks and they will have access to a pantry of other items. After preparing their dish, participants will provide a presentation to the judges, demonstrating their knowledge of MyPlate nutrition information, food preparation safety and skills, food appearance and quality, creativity, public speaking skills, and teamwork.
