Segursky to assume role as Director of Special Education at GCS

- Staff Reports

Ann Cross, Director of Special Education and long- term employee of Gordon County Schools, announced to the Board of Education last month that she would be retiring at the end of November. Under her leadership, the Special Education Department for Gordon County has flourished, with significant gains in student achievement for students with disabilities.

Filling the Director’s seat upon Cross’ retirement will be Alecia Segursky, a familiar face in Gordon County’s Special Education Department. The Board of Education approved Segursky’s appointment to the position during its Board of Education meeting on Sept. 14.

Segursky has been with Gordon County Schools since 1995, where she began as a teacher at Ashworth Middle School. In 2006, she was named Assistant Special Education Director and has held many additional responsibilities throughout her time as a district- level administrator, including System Assessment Coordinator and District PreK Project Coordinator.

Segursky holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and graduate degrees in Educational Leadership.

Upon being approved for this position, Segursky stated, “I am extremely honored and blessed to have the opportunity to serve as Gordon County Schools Director of Special Education. I am looking forward to continuing my work with students with disabilities, their families, and all staff.”

Cross, who has worked with Segursky for many years in her current position, is confident that the stellar work of the department will continue under their new director. “Alecia is an excellent candidate for this position,” said Cross. “Her entire career has been spent ensuring that every student with disabilities lives up and surpasses his potential. She has been a local, state and national presenter as an expert in special education, and in keeping with the district’s theme for this school year, is truly a model for what it means to go the 2nd mile.”

A retirement reception honoring Ann Cross will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 3- 5 p. m. at the Gordon County College and Career Academy. Sergursky will assume her new role effective Dec. 1.
