Lady Jackets hold off Bremen for hard-fought subregion win

It certainly wasn’t easy, but the Calhoun Lady Jackets earned a subregion win at home on Thursday as they were the last team standing in a back-andforth battle against Bremen.

The Lady Jackets ( 12- 3, 2- 1 subregion) jumped on top early with a 4-1 lead after the first inning, but Bremen battled back and took a 7-6 lead after four. Calhoun then scored the decisive two runs in the fifth and held on from there thanks to the strong relief pitching of Blair Hall who earned the win.

Hall went five innings in relief and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits while striking out two. Maggie McBrayer started the game and went two innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits. Bremen drew seven walks in the game.

Offensivel­y, a quartet of Calhoun players had two hits apiece. Lyndi Rae Davis led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Hall added two hits an RBI and two runs scored, Anna Taylor had two hits and two runs scored and Carlie Henderson also had two hits. Maddie Bumgardner and Adella Carver drove in a run apiece as well. Erin Barnes reached base twice on walks and scored a run.

Calhoun visited Bremen on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be back home Wednesday to host rival Sonoravill­e at 5 p.m. in a game with big subregion implica- tions.

SOFTBALL Gordon Central 15, Coosa 1

The Lady Warriors were patient at the plate on Thursday and that led to a big night on the scoreboard in a dominant four- inning, mercy- rule shortened region road win.

Gordon Central (3-9, 3-5) drew an amazing 12 walks in the game, which lasted only four innings. Destiny Parker drew three walks and drove in two runs, Mackenzie Hall and Cheyenne Temple walked twice apiece and each drove in a run and Cristian Knight also had two RBIs. Morgan Frank added two hits, including a double, and one RBI, and Kaleigh Rogers contribute­d a hit and an RBI. Dalyn Muse also had a hit and scored two runs.

Frank earned the win in the circle by pitching the four-inning complete game. She allowed one run on two hits while striking out six.

Gordon Central was on the road at Pepperell on Tuesday. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They visit Armuchee on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Haralson County 5, Calhoun 4

The Lady Jackets rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the sixth, but Haralson County scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to send Calhoun to a subregion loss on Friday.

Calhoun ( 12- 4, 2- 2 subregion) was behind 4-3 after five innings but scored the tying run in the sixth. However, they couldn’t push across any more, and Haralson County took advantage in the bottom of the seventh. Lyndi Rae Davis had a big offensive day with a homer among her two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. Carlie Henderson and Anna Taylor each added three hits, Blair Hall had two hits and an RBI and Audrey Wilbanks drove in a run and had a hit.

Calhoun, Sonoravill­e compete at Score Tournament

Both Calhoun and Sonoravill­e traveled to Chattanoog­a over the weekend to play in the Score Tournament at Warner Park and each team faced tough competitio­n.

The Lady Jackets went 1-1 as they only played on Saturday due to a reschedule­d subregion game at Haralson County on Friday. In their two games, Calhoun (13-5) lost to Wesleyan 3-2 and defeated Rockmart 7- 0. In the loss to Wesleyan, Carlie Henderson had two hits, and Jordan Blair drove in a run. Maggie McBrayer took the loss despite pitching well, going all seven innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out 12.

Against Rockmart, Blair Hall got the com- plete-game shutout win by going seven innings and giving up just three hits while striking out three. Offensivel­y, Lyndi Rae Davis had two hits and two RBIs, Anna Taylor added a double, and Audrey Wilbanks and Hannah Mashburn each had a hit and an RBI.

The Lady Phoenix (11-10) played both Friday and Saturday at the tournament and finished 1- 3 in their four games. On Friday, Sonoravill­e dropped two one-run ball games, losing 6-5 to Gordon Lee and 4-3 to Cass. They rebounded in their first game on Saturday to beat Dalton, 5-4, before closing the tournament out with a 7-2 loss to Christian Heritage.

Sonoravill­e visited Adairsvill­e for a doublehead­er on Tuesday. ( For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit rival Calhoun on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL Calhoun moves into tie for first in area with win

Calhoun earned a three-set win over Bremen on the road on Thursday night to put them in a tie for first place in Area 1-AAA alongside the Lady Blue Devils.
