Shaw Industries completes record breaking United Way Campaign in Gordon County

- Staff Reports

Shaw Industries recently completed a record breaking United Way campaign in Gordon County. The dollar amount from the employees increased by almost $24,000 over last year’s campaign total and makes the 2017-18 Shaw Campaign the largest Shaw Campaign in the history of United Way of Gordon County.

The Shaw plants in Gordon County lead the entire Northwest Georgia area in participation rates ranging from 62-90 percent of the associates in facilitates located in Gordon County giving to United Way. Gordon County Shaw associates have led the participation percentage at Shaw for several years.

“It seems to be a source of pride for them,” according to United Way Executive Director Vickie Spence. “It is hard to imagine getting more than 250 employees to agree at a 90 percent level to anything, especially when it deals with money and that is exactly what happened at Plant D5!”

During this campaign, Plants D4 and WF both reduced their participation numbers but increased their donations by almost $10,000. The average participation rate for all eight facilities located in Gordon County is 76 percent of the employees donating to United Way, up from 70 percent last year. This year, the Shaw teams decided to handle most of the campaign in house.

The associates shared their experiences volunteering with the 18 United Way agencies. During the Spring Service Projects, associates volunteered at various United Way agencies in Gordon County. The associates are given the opportunity to volunteer for four hours during their workday. They gain knowledge about what the agencies do and understand the needs more clearly. This partnership has provided hundreds of volunteer hours to the 18 United Way agencies working in Gordon County and significant growth in contributions. Shaw is very involved with other community projects including Christmas in July, Breast Cancer Awareness and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

With the results from the Shaw Industries campaign and other gifts, United Way of Gordon County is now at 30 percent of its goal for this year.

The United Way of Gordon County Campaign to raise funds for the 18 United Way agencies continues. The goal for this year is $650,000.
