does “sailing her own ship.” I am thankful she served as a player and coach under the direction of Coach Jerry Pruett. I admire the man greatly and hope he knows I was always in his corner. Being a head coach in any activity is a lonely endeavor. I wish both Coach Pruett and Coach Ralston the best in their future endeavors.
Those about whom I never write
Occasionally I am reminded my writings are slanted toward Calhoun High and the athletes at Calhoun. That is not denied. As often stated I write off the top of my head. My offerings are commentary or opinion pieces.
For instance today I had no notes and only two written lines prompted my comments. One simply read “Coach Jerry Pruett and Coach Kayla Ralston.” The other said “Every girl a winner.”
From those words I began to write from my mind and heart. It is what I know or familiar with.
Today I am going to indicate why it is difficult to write about athletes from other schools. What I know about them I learn from the writings of Alex Farrer. I have expressed my admiration and well-wishes for Chad Hayes at Sonoraville. I have told how much I enjoyed Brent Mashburn’s career as a player and admired him as a coach.
Take Sonoraville’s Lady Phoenix softball team: I know four young ladies on that team: Mollie Locke, Kristen Davis, Payton Townsend and Sandra Beth Pritchett. I sat close to first base at Sonoraville in their game with Calhoun. I expressed to Payton Townsend that she was a very good athlete.
It takes me to the end of a season to learn Coach Diane Smith’s girls. Today I can’t distinguish some of the young ones – maybe by the time they are seniors.
