Firebirds win Woodstock Invitational behind strong efforts
The Sonoraville wrestling team took a trip to the Woodstock Invitational on Saturday and came away as the top dog in a competitive, 18-team field.
The Firebirds finished atop the team standings to earn the first-place trophy. They scored 237 total points to finish ahead of Cass (186), North Paulding ( 151) and Creekview (135).
Individual first place finishers in their weight class were Eli Knight (106), Tyler Hunt (132), Trevor Burdick (138) and John Knight (195). Hunt also avenged his only loss from last season during the tournament.
Gavin Thompson (120) took second in his class, and Jayce Derryberry (126) and Charlie Brown (182) each finished third. The Firebirds had five other topsix individual finishes.
Sonoraville is back at home on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Lumpkin County as they celebrate alumni night.

WRESTLING Sonoraville sweeps tri-match
The Firebirds went on the road to Ringgold on Thursday night and came away with a pair of wins in tri-match.
Sonoraville defeated host Ringgold 62-18 and then beat LFO 54-16. Against the Tigers, winners were Eli Knight ( 106, forfeit), Hector Arbos (113, pin), Jayce Derryberry ( 126, DQ), Tyler Hunt (132, forfeit), Trevor Burdick ( 138, pin), Brandon Bell (145, forfeit), Levi Meadows (170, decision), Charlie Brown (182, technical fall), John Knight (195, pin), Ryan Redd (220, pin), Brandon Bristol (285, pin).
In the victory over LFO, winners were Eli Knight ( 106, forfeit), Arbos ( 113, technical fall), Thompson ( 120, forfeit), Derryberry (126, forfeit), Hunt (132, pin), Burdick ( 138, technical fall), Bell (145, pin), Hunter Wilson (160, forfeit), Brown (182, pin) and Knight (195, decision).
BASKETBALL Sonoraville boys 53, North Murray 43
After big offensive efforts in their first three games of the season, the Phoenix were able to grind out a low-scoring affair on Friday in a Region 6-AAA crossover matchup on the road.
Sonoraville ( 4- 0) trailed 9-8 after one quarter but earned a halftime lead by outscoring North Murray 19- 11 in the second. They added to their lead with a 13-7 advantage in the third to lead 40-27 going to the final period and then held on from there.
Top scorer Wil Walraven was held to just five points as the Mountaineers focused most of their defensive attention on him, but others stepped up for the Phoenix, including Seth Harkins, who had a game-high 16 points. Trenton Daniel added 15.
Sonoraville was at Murray County on Tues- day for another region crossover matchup. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They are back home on Friday to host LFO at 8:30 p.m.
North Murray girls 62, Sonoraville 43
The Lady Phoenix fell behind early and could never fully recover in a region crossover loss on the road on Friday.
Sonoraville ( 2- 2) trailed 16-8 after one quarter and then 30-18 at the half before the Lady Mountaineers put the game completely out of reach with a 21-12 advantage in the third quarter.
Maliyah Parks was the lone Sonoraville scorer to reach double figures with 18. Alexa Geary and Sandi McMullin each added six.
The Lady Phoenix visited Murray County on Tuesday in another 6-AAA crossover matchup. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They return home to host LFO on Friday at 7 p.m.
Cartersville girls 51, Calhoun 43
The Lady Jackets led at the half in their season opener on the road on Saturday, but a strong second half by Cartersville sent Calhoun to a tough loss.
Calhoun ( 0- 1) led 23-19 at the break, but Cartersville outscored the Lady Jackets 14-7 in the third and 18-13 in the fourth to pull ahead and earn a win on their home court.
Erin Davis led the Lady Jackets with 14 points and also added eight steals in the contest. Anna George and Maggie McBrayer both added eight points.
Calhoun visited Coahulla Creek on Tuesday for a region crossover matchup. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Chattooga on Saturday at 5 p.m.
