County offices closed on Monday, Board approves several motions Tuesday

The Gordon County Board of Commission­ers kicked off 2018 with a short, regular meeting. The next Board of Commission­ers meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16. County offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In other board news: Approved the 2018 Community Disaster Awareness and Preparedne­ss Plan. Courtney Taylor, director of Emergency Management, said the plan details how t he department communicat­es and educates the community before, during and after a disaster.

“We actually use this plan monthly since it’s for communicat­ion and education,” Taylor said.

Sonia Edwards, probate court with 14 years, was named Gordon County’s employee of the month for January.

The Board set the qualifying fees for county commission­er posts at $ 180. The position has a base salary of $ 6,000 per year. Qualifying fees for the school board posts are $ 18 and has a base salary of $ 600 per year.

The Board approved requests to re- appoint Jimmy Brown and Ray Denmon to the Gordon County Hospital Authority for a threeyear term.

Approved a request from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office requesting the county to declare a Glock 17, 9 mm pistol as surplus in order to present it to Major Michael Jones, who is retiring at the end of January after 31 years on the job.
