Sonoraville boys fight back in second half for subregion win

The Sonoraville Phoenix were tested on Tuesday night on the road in a subregion contest but showed why they are one of the teams to beat in Region 6-AAA with a strong second half to earn a gutsy win over Bremen, 64-56.

Sonoraville trailed 24-19 at the half, but came out strong in the third quarter to outscore the Blue Devils 21-13 in the period to take a 40-37 lead. They then finished off the victory with a 24-19 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Lucas Brooks had a big night for the Phoenix (15-2, 2-0 subregion) with 19 points to lead the scoring. Wil Walraven added 16, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Trent Daniel contributed 13 points.

The Phoenix were on the road again on Friday at Adairsville as they looked to maintain their unbeaten subregion record. ( For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will host rival Cal- houn on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

BASKETBALL Sonoraville girls 50, Bremen 39

The Lady Phoenix played stifling defense in the first half and coupled that with a dominant third quarter to pull away for a subregion victory on the road on Tuesday.

Sonoraville (11-4, 2-0 subregion) led 18-15 at the half but took control in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Devils 18-6 in the period. Bremen stayed within striking distance in the fourth but could never put together a run to get the game back within a few possessions.

Maliyah Parks led the scoring for the Lady Phoenix with 16 points. Alexa Geary added 12, and Grace Darnell contributed nine.

Sonoraville visited Adairsville on Friday for another subregion contest. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are back at home on Tuesday to host rival Calhoun at 6 p.m.

Northwest Whitfield boys 56, Calhoun 55

The Jackets made a second-half charge after trailing at the break but came up just short on the road in a non-region game on Tuesday.

Calhoun (2-10) fell behind 36-28 at the half but rallied to outscore the Bruins 17-12 in the third to pull within 48-45 going to the fourth quarter. Northwest Whitfield made a few more plays down the stretch to hold on in the final period, however.

Chase Goble had a big night for Calhoun with a game-high 22, including four 3s. He scored 14 of the Jackets’ 17 in the third quarter. Davis Allen was also in double figures in the game with 15 points. Caleb Boone added eight.

The Jackets were at Bremen on Friday for a subregion contest. ( For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will make the short trip to take on rival Sonoraville on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Northwest Whitfield girls 60, Calhoun 31

The Lady Jackets fell behind early and then saw Northwest Whitfield put the game completely out of reach in the third quarter to send Calhoun to a non-region road loss on Tuesday.

Calhoun (6-7) trailed 31-15 at the half before the Lady Bruins dominated the third quarter to the tune of 21-4 in the period as they earned a 52-19 lead heading into the fourth.

No Lady Jackets reached double figures in scoring as Erin Davis had a team-high eight. Railey Greeson added seven.

Calhoun was on the road at Bremen on Friday. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are at rival Sonoraville on Tuesday for a big subregion matchup at 6 p.m.

SWIMMING Calhoun boys win, girls second at home quad meet

The Calhoun swim teams hosted Heritate, Cass and Southeast Whitfield last Thursday for a quad meet, and the Jackets came away with a victory while the Lady Jackets took second.

The Calhoun boys scored 375 points to finish ahead of Southeast Whitfield ( 184), Heritage (122) and Cass (104).

The Jackets took first or second in every event. Bo Dyar, John Carroll and Cal Parker each had four firstplace finishes, and Brody Bushong, Dawson Kerns and Jeremiah Petty each had two. Markie Hutzler, Josh Tolson and Rucker Reeves also had a first- place finish.

The Calhoun girls finished second with 283 points behind Heritage (311). Cass had 148 points, and Southeast Whitfield had 65.

Allie Workman had two first-place finishes for the Lady Jackets, and Reese Duke and Abby Reid each had one.

Josh Tolson led the way in boys diving with 234 points, and Chandler Nesbitt led girls diving with 165.35 points.

Calhoun is back home this weekend to host the Northwest Georgia Swim and Dive Championships at the CAC.
