Calhoun tops field at NWGA Swim, Dive Championsh­ips

The Calhoun High Swim and Dive Teams hosted the third annual Northwest Georgia Swim and Dive Championsh­ips on January 12- 13 at the Calhoun Aquatic Center. Twenty-two teams made up the field with 600 swimmers competing. Meet, pool and team records were broken as well as 186 Georgia State Qualifying Times recorded.

Calhoun’s boys and girls team came away as big winners as they took first place overall with 618 points finishing just ahead of Rome High’s 616 points. Blessed Trinity took third place with 574 points.

The Calhoun boys took first place with 384 points. Rome boys came in second place with 329 points with Blessed Trinity boys placed third place with 280 points.

Josh Tolson led the Calhoun boys on Friday night by setting a meet, pool and Calhoun High record with his firstplace finish in diving.

Podium finishes for Calhoun boys swimming were Dyar, Parker, Carroll, Bushong in the 200- yard medley relay in first place; Dyar in the 200- yard individual medley in second place; Carroll in the 50-yard free in third place; Carroll in the 100- yard butterfly in third place; Parker in the 100-yard free in first place; Mitchum in the 500-yard free in second place; Bushong, Carroll, Dyar and Parker in the 200-yard free relay in first place; Dyar in the 100 yard backstroke in second place; Monforte in the 100- yard backstroke in third place; Parker in the 100-yard breaststro­ke in second place; Tolson, Bates, Mitchum and Petty in the 400- yard free relay in second place.

The Calhoun High girls came in fourth place with 234 points behind first place Jefferson girls with 346 points, second- place Blessed Trinity girls with 294 points and third-place Rome girls with 287 points.

Chandler Nesbitt and Abby Crowe each scored points for the Calhoun girls during Friday night’s diving.

Podium finishes for Girls Swimming were Duke, Reid, Workman and Funes in the 200yard medley relay in third place; Workman in the 200- yard freestyle in first place; Reid in the 200 individual medley relay in third place; Duke in the 500- yard freestyle in third place; Duke in the 100-yard backstroke in second place; Reid in the 100-yard breaststro­ke in third place; Duke, Funes, Workman and Reid 400-yard free relay in second place.

Calhoun is back in action this weekend when they travel to compete in the North Georgia Regional. They will host their final home meet of the season on Thursday at the Calhoun Aquatic Center against Etowah, Coahulla Creek and Gilmer. They will wrap up the season Feb. 2-3 with State qualifiers at the GHSA State Meet at Georgia Tech.
