Protecting Our Children

-

Our last Democrat President said that our country was no longer a Christian nation. Thank God he is wrong. Our money still says “In God We Trust.” Our federal buildings in Washington still have references to God and as far as I know, Congress still opens with a prayer to the Almighty God.

The tragedy in Florida at Parkland School was a terrible tragedy. There were many mistakes made by the FBI and the local law enforcement officials. Our background checks on the young man who did the shooting failed in allowing him to purchase the high powered weapon and ammunition for it.

There are a number of steps we need to take now nationwide, but our first step should be to pray and ask our Almighty God for His help. The anti- gun lobby is already calling to get rid of all of the private gun ownership in America. The men who wrote our Constitution thought gun ownership was so important that it was included earlier in the ten amendments of the document than how our government would be established. The purpose of Amendment 2 was to allow the citizens the right to own weapons so the government could not become the only military power, overrun the citizens and become a dictatorship. At that time, the citizens also needed weapons to hunt wild animals for food.

Even the President is commenting favorably about raising the age requirement to purchase a rifle from 18 years to 21 years. Young men are taken into the army at age 18, and after two years of service as a soldier using the equivalent of the AR- 15, they are discharged at 20 years old and are not considered qualified to own this weapon for another year. This action is being considered doors would stay locked and the students would line up against the wall with the least view from the door. The young man pulled the fire alarm and the doors were unlocked. The students poured out into the hallway where the shooter began to shoot them. He then walked from door to door shooting the students he could see. After perhaps four minutes he was through with his shooting. He slipped out of the Khaki uniform, threw down his rifle, and joined the students that were exiting the building. He left the campus, went to a local big box store and had some refreshments. He then started walking to the home where he was living with his foster parents. Some of the students had seen him change clothes and reported what he was wearing when he left the building. Other students recognized who he was. This was reported to all of the local police. One officer was driving in the area and spotted him walking down the sidewalk. He stopped and detained him while other officers arrived. The young man immediately acknowledged his actions. In his mental state, he was probably still proud of what he had done and expected respect from the police.

This is a very hard problem to be able to prevent in any location. Israel has not had a school shooting in a number of years. They have weapons in every classroom and several know how to use them. The only defense against a criminal with guns is more guns and folks who are not afraid to use them. The most dangerous place in the nation is a gun- free zone where only the criminals have guns.

Solving these shooting problems is not going to be easy. We are blessed to have a President who, when he finds a problem, will not quit until he finds the solution to the problem.
