SOCCER Gordon Central boys 2, Armuchee 1

The Warriors rallied after surrendering an early goal to tie it before the half and then got a clutch goal late to earn a big region road win on Friday.

Gordon Central (4-3, 1-1 Region 7-AA) went down early in the contest with the Indians scoring in the first five minutes. But the Warriors’ defense regrouped and held Armuchee scoreless for the remainder of the game. Jonny Rivas tied the game up in the first half with a goal of a free kick from just outside the box to make it 1-1 at the break.

The two teams battled defensively in the second half before Rivas scored the game-winner with about seven minutes remaining off an assist from Sergio Her- nandez. Rivas broke through the Armuchee defense off Hernandez’s pass and shot one off the post and in.

Gordon Central coach Matt Wiley said goalkeeper Brent Silvar was a big part of the win as well in goal with several incredible saves.

The Warriors were back home on Tuesday to host Dade County in a region contest. ( For details on that match, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They will host Pepperell on Friday at 7 p.m. in another tough 7-AA test.
