Lady Jackets, Warriors come through in region wins

The Calhoun girls soccer team started their region schedule off on a positive note with a solid road win on Tuesday.

The Lady Jackets went on the road to Lakeshore Park in Dalton and earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Coahulla Creek. The game was originally scheduled as a home game for Calhoun (3-3-2, 1-0 in 6-AAA), but was moved due to wet field conditions.

Scoring in the contest for the Lady Jackets was Michelly Huitanda and Gracie Amonett.

Calhoun was back on the road on Thursday to visit LFO in another region contest. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Bremen next Friday (March 16) at 5 p.m.

SOCCER Gordon Central boys 2, Coosa 1

Gordon Central went on the road and got a big 7-AA win on Wednesday thanks to a solid team effort.

Scoring goals for the Warriors (5-3, 2-1) was Alfredo Pegueros and Sergio Ortiz.

Gordon Central is back home on Friday for another big region game against Pepperell at 7 p.m. They host Armuchee on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Coahulla Creek boys 3, Calhoun 2 (PK Shootout)

The Jackets battled back from a two-goal deficit at halftime to tie the game but eventually fell in a shootout on Tuesday night in their Region 6-AAA opener on the road.

Calhoun (3-3-1, 0-1) surrendere­d two goals in the first half but got second-half goals from Gerardo Fraire and Julio Lopez to tie the game at the end of regulation to force overtime and eventually send the game into penalty kicks. Fraire and Daniel Isep each contribute­d an assist.

Eduardo Fajardo was also solid in goal for the Jackets with give saves.

Calhoun visited LFO on Thursday. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit Baylor (Tenn.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a tough non-region test.

BASEBALL Sonoravill­e 1, Woodland 0 (10 innings)

The Phoenix earned a non-region victory in a pitcher’s duel on Tuesday at Lakepoint thanks to clutch hit in the 10th inning.

Sonoravill­e (2-2) got stellar pitching from four different players, and Wyatt Castoe came through with an RBI-single in the 10th to end the game by driving in Colton Smith. Grant Hegwood also had two hits in the contest, and Chase Kirby, Gavin Phillips and Avery Hopper each had one. Kirby also stole two bases.

Trent Walker earned the win in relief as he pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit. Castoe started the game and went five frames as he only allowed one hit while striking out seven. Gage Soulios backed that effort up with 2 2-3 innings of shutout relief as he struck out six and didn’t allow a hit, and Collin Bridges came in to get one out in relief.

Sonoravill­e hosted Chattooga on Thursday for another non-region contest. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They are at home again on Friday against Cass at 5:30 p.m.

TENNIS Sonoravill­e sweeps Coahulla Creek

The Sonoravill­e girls and boys tennis teams went on the road on Tuesday and each came away with a region win.

The Lady Phoenix (4-1, 3-0) defeated Coahulla Creek 4-1 with singles wins coming from Joanna Gallman, Anna Trantham and Ashton Woodring and the doubles team of Kerrie Bailey and Jacyrae Cagle also picking up a point.

The Sonoravill­e boys (4-0, 2-0) cruised to a 5-0 win as Jacob Rickett, John Lister and Tripp Morrison swept singles matches, and the team of Brandon Busby and Jonathan Rickett and the team of Spencer Ford and Grayson Boley earned wins in doubles.

Sonoravill­e was scheduled to host Adairsvill­e on Thursday for another region match. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will travel to LaGrange on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Granger Invitation­al Tournament.

Calhoun gets wins over Heritage

Calhoun defended their home court on Tuesday with non-region wins over Heritage for both the girls and boys teams.

The Lady Jackets ( 4- 1) defeated Heritage 4-1 with singles wins coming from Emma King (No. 1) and Jalen Holland (No. 2). They added doubles points from the team of Ruby Christian and Rachel Frankenber­ger ( No. 1) and the team of Neeley Abernathy and Emma Blackstock (No. 2).

The Calhoun boys (5-1) also earned a 4-1 victory over the Generals as they swept singles matches thanks to Coen Marcus (No. 1), Luke McKenzie (No. 2) and Matthew Turner (No. 3). The No. 1 doubles team of Hunter Hartsfield and Rucker Reeves also earned a win.

Calhoun was scheduled to host Haralson County and Bremen on Thursday in region matchups. (For details on those matches, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will travel to LaGrange on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Granger Invitation­al Tournament.

GOLF Warriors, Lady Warriors each defeat Adairsvill­e

Both Gordon Central golf scores, stats and game info to Sports Editor Alex Farrer at afarrer@calhountim­es.com. teams visited Barnsley Gardens on Tuesday to take on Adairsvill­e, and both came away with victories.

The Lady Warriors shot a 170 as a team to finish five strokes ahead of Adairsvill­e. Abigail Hayes had the team’s low score with a 52. Amberly Wilson (57) and Celeste Huffman (61) rounded out the scoring.

The Gordon Central boys downed Adairsvill­e by four strokes as they finished with a 200. Isaac McEntyre was the low man on the day for the Warriors with a 45, and Joshua Hardin added a 48. Jordan Hardin carded a 49, and Alex Neal shot a 58 to complete the team score.

The Gordon Central boys will compete in the LaFayette 18-hole tournament on Saturday at LaFayette Golf Course. Both the Gordon Central girls and boys will host Chattooga on Monday at the Calhoun Elks Club.

GC girls, boys compete at Meadow Lakes

The Gordon Central golf teams traveled to take on Pepperell and Coosa at Meadow Lakes on Wednesday and had a solid performanc­e.

The boys team defeated Coosa and Pepperell and were led by Isaac McEntyre with a 44 and Jordan Hardin with a 45.
