Sonoraville baseball opens region play with road victory
The Sonoraville Phoenix opened region play with a big 18-5 win on the road thanks to some explosive offense over the final four innings against Murray County.
Sonoraville ( 5- 3, 1- 0) trailed 3-1 after three innings but scored six in the fourth to jump into the lead. They then added two in the fifth, five in the sixth and four in the seventh to run away with the victory. Leading the charge at the plate was Avery Hopper with three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs. Beau Bullard was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored, and Matthew Vincent had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Chase Kirby had two hits, an RBI and five runs scored from the leadoff spot, Trent Walker added a hit and an RBI, Wyatt Castoe drove in two runs and Tyler Lyles drove in a run and scored two runs.
The Phoenix used three pitchers in the game with Walker going the first three innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out one. Collin Bridges and Hopper each provided two innings of relief with Bridges allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two and Hopper allowing no runs, one hit and striking out three.
Sonoraville was back at home on Thursday to host rival Calhoun. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They host Haralson County on Friday at 5:55 p.m.

TRACK Calhoun girls, boys sweep home meet
Calhoun hosted five teams for a competitive meet on Tuesday and came away on top of the girls and boys standings thanks to some strong performances.
The Calhoun boys finished with 126.5 total points to finish ahead of Gordon Central (117), Ringgold (38), Coahulla Creek (27.5) and Model (25). The Jackets were led by Drew Rutledge who placed first in both the 400 meter dash (51.78) and the discus (113-01.50). They also had first-place finishes from Ben Tow in the 800 meter (2:08), Felipe Barrios in the 1600 meter (5:04), Brody Blalock in the 3200 meter (11:04), Luke Moseley in the long jump (21-02.25), Jonkell Tolbert in the triple jump (4005.50) and CJ Fuller in the shot put (47-02.25). They had 10 other top three finishes.
The Calhoun girls totaled 87.5 points to take first in the team standings over Coahulla Creek (75), Gordon Central (72), Ringgold (67.5) and Model (25). The Lady Jackets had first-place finishes from Erin Davis in the 200 meter dash (29.33), Elizabeth Peyton in the 800 meter (2:45) and MaKail Lawrence in the discus (88-09). They had 11 other top-three finishes.
The Gordon Central boys had a solid day finishing narrowly behind Calhoun in the team standings as they were led by Luke Beavers who finished first in both the 300 meter hurdles (42.85) and high jump (5-08). Also earning firstplace finishes for the Warriors were Corey Dixon in the 100 meter dash (11.40), Logan Swaim in the pole vault (10-00), the 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ team (44.52) and the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team (3:51). They had 10 other top-three finishes.
The Gordon Central girls had three first-place finishes, coming from Lizbeth Alvarez in the pole vault (6-06), Tayla Gunn in the triple jump (3304) and Catera McBride in the shot put (31-00.25). They had seven other top-three finishes.
Both Gordon Central and Calhoun will compete in the Mohawk-Warrior Invitational on Saturday at Gordon Central starting at 9:30 a.m.
TENNIS Sonoraville sweeps North Murray
Both the Sonoraville girls and boys teams defended their home court on Tuesday, earning region wins over North Murray.
The Sonoraville boys (9-1, 5-0) defeated the Mountaineers 4-1 as they got singles wins from John Lister (No. 2) and Tripp Morrison (No. 3) to go with doubles wins from the team of Brandon Busby and Jonathan Rickett (No. 1) and the team of Grayson Boley and Spencer Ford (No. 2).
The Lady Phoenix (6-5, 4-2) also won by a 4-1 score over North Murray as Jo Gallman won at No. 1 singles and Anna Trantham won at No. 2 singles. They also swept the doubles matches, getting wins from the team of Brooke Childs and Esther Hayes (No. 1) and the team of Jacy Rae Cagle and Kerrie Bailey (No. 2).
They were back at home on Thursday to host Bremen in another region match. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will host rival Calhoun on Monday at 4 p.m.
Calhoun dominates Ringgold
The Calhoun girls and boys tennis teams earned dominant region wins on Tuesday as neither lost a set on their home court against Ringgold.
The Lady Jackets (10-2, 7-0) won 5-0 as they swept singles matches thanks to Carly Briggs (No. 1), Emma King (No. 2) and Jalen Holland (No. 3). They also earned both doubles points thanks to wins by the team of Molly Mashburn and Rachel Frankenberger (No. 1) and the team of Neeley Abernathy and Emma Blackstock (No. 2).
The Calhoun boys (10-3, 7-0) earned a 4-0 victory with singles wins coming from Coen Marcus (No. 1) and Matthew McCanless ( No. 3) and doubles wins from the team of Matthew Turner and Hunter Hartsfield (No. 1) and the team of Rucker Reeves and Dawson Williams (No. 2).
Calhoun visited Murray County on Thursday as they tried to keep their undefeated region records alive. (For details on that match, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will visit rival Sonoraville on Monday at 4 p.m.
Calhoun wins on road over Coahulla Creek
Calhoun’s girls and boys teams went on the road on Monday and made quick work of Coahulla Creek in region matches as they both earned 5-0 victories.
For the Lady Jackets (9-2, 6-0) earning wins at singles were Carly Briggs ( No. 1), Emma King (No. 2) and Jalen Holland (No. 3) and doubles wins came from the team of Molly Mashburn and Rachel Frankenberger (No. 1) and the team of Neeley Abernathy and Ruby Christian (No. 2).
The Calhoun boys (9-3, 6-0) swept singles matches thanks to Marcus Coen (No. 1), Hunter Hartsfield (No. 2) and Matthew McCanless (No. 3) and doubles matches thanks to the team of Matthew Turner and Hunter Hartsfield ( No. 1) and the team of Rucker Reeves and Dawson Williams (No. 2).
Sonoraville splits at Haralson County
The Sonoraville boys earned a win on the road on Monday while the Lady Phoenix took a tough loss.
The Phoenix (8-1, 4-0) defeated the Rebels 4-1 with singles wins from John Lister (No. 1) and Tripp Morrison (No. 2) and doubles wins from the team of Brandon Busby and Jonathan Rickett (No. 1) and the team of Spencer Ford and Grayson Boley (No. 2).
The Lady Phoenix (5-5, 3-2) fell 4-1 to Haralson County with their only win coming at No. 1 singles from Jo Gallman.
GOLF Sonoraville golf hosts tri-match at Fields Ferry
The Sonoraville golf teams hosted Pickens County and Cedartown for a tri-match on Tuesday at Fields Ferry, and the boys finished in second.
The Phoenix shots a 175 as a team to finish behind Cedartown (165) and in front of Pickens County (189). Accounting for the team score for Sonoraville was Ryan Redd (40), Paxton Jarrett (44), Blake Rouzee (44) and Destin Summers (48). Also completing rounds were Christian Ballistreri (47), Tucker Murray (50), Cody Grantham (48) and Lane Worley (38).
Clara Hulsey and Jenna Palazzolo competed for Sonoraville on the girls side and shot a 40 and 63, respectively.
Sonoraville will visit North Murray at Indian Trace for their next match on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Phoenix compete at Cartersville
The Sonoraville boys visited Cartersville Country Club for a tri-match and had some solid individual rounds.
The Phoenix shot a 179 as a team to finish behind Cartersville (158) and North Paulding (177). Ryan Redd had the low score for the team with a 42, and Paxton Jarrett shot a 43. Destin Summers (46) and Blake Rouzee (48) rounded out the team score.
Individual rounds not counting toward the team score were completed by Lane Worley (52), Cody Grantham (57), Tucker Murray (51) and Christian Balistreri (44).
