Calhoun boys earn another win thanks to strong defense

The Calhoun boys soccer team used the recipe of strong defense and opportunis­tic offense again on Tuesday night, and the result was another region win.

The Jackets defended their home field by beating Murray County 2-0. Calhoun (6-4-1, 3-1 in 6-AAA) had goals scored by Oscar Huerta and Daniel Isep, and Isep and Gerardo Fraire provided assists.

Calhoun goalkeeper Eduardo Fajardo recorded a shutout with the help of the Jackets’ defense for the second straight game. Calhoun was on the road at Ringgold on Thursday. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be back at home next Thursday to host North Murray at 7 p.m. in a huge Region 6-AAA matchup.

In other recent prep sports action: runs on two hits and striking out two.

After Rome rallied to tie the game in the fifth, Calhoun got a run in the bottom half of the inning and another in the sixth to secure a non-region home win on Wednesday.

The Jackets (9-4) jumped on top 5-1 after two innings, but Rome battled right back to tie it at 5-5 with four in the third. Calhoun went ahead again with a run in the bottom of the third, and the Wolves once again answered to tie things up in the fifth with a run.

Leading the offense for Calhounw as Carson Kemp with two hits, three RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Nate Bonner had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored, and Ben King and Payton Morrow each had a hit and an RBI apiece. Davis Allen, Brett Potts and Jeremy Register also added hits.

On the mound, Brady Drummond earned the win in relief, going two innings and giving up one run (unearned) on three hits while striking out two. King nailed down the save by pitching a scoreless seventh and giving up no hits while striking out two. Matthew Williams started the game and got a no decision after allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out one in four innings of work.

Sonoravill­e rallied from an early deficit to tie the game, but a four-run seventh by the visiting Blue Devils was the difference in a region loss for the Phoenix.

Sonoravill­e trailed 4-1 after three innings but scored three in the fifth to tie it at 4-4. Unfortunat­ely, the Devils had the final push with their big seventh inning.

Tyler Lyles led the offense for the Phoenix with a threerun homer, and Gage Soulios added a hit and an RBI. Chase Kirby, Grant Hegwood, Matthew Vincent and Beau Bullard all had hits as well.

The Phoenix were back on the road on Thursday at Adairsvill­e. (For details on that game, see Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.) They will be at home on Friday at 5:55 p.m. to host LFO.

The Phoenix and Lady Phoenix fought in some highly competitiv­e matches on Tuesday on their home court but fell short in both region matches.

The Sonoravill­e girls (6-7, 4-4 in 6-AAA) lost 3-2 to the visiting Lady Indians with their two points coming at No. 1 singles from Jo Gallman and at No. 3 singles from Ashton Woodring. Anna Trantham lost a tough match at No. 2 singles in three sets.

The Phoenix (9-3, 5-2 in 6-AAA) lost 5-0 to the Indians with Tripp Morrison coming the closest to a victory as he fell in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 5-7).
